So whats all the hype about BOMA?

Hi
I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't care for Boma and either did my friend.
She liked the prime rib, and I liked the squash soup, but that was about it. I couldn't wait to try Boma, since I don't eat any meat, and thought the food would be great. I was so disappointed. A lot of the food tasted sweet, and it was only lukewarm. We didn't really even care for the desserts. I couldn't wait to try the Zebra domes, but they were just ok. I think you just have to try it for yourself. We won't go back, except to visit AKL. It's a beautiful resort.

Actually Stittsville, "it's time" to get off the rosemary. Geez. I just made one comment about a spice I don't care for. I really couldn't care less what food it goes with, I don't like it. Does that mean Im in a rut? And anyway, I "thought" this thread was about Boma, not rosemary. For gosh sakes people....drop it already. And think of it this way: that just means more rosemary for you!!!

No, you didn't say you didn't like it, you said it was weird. To me, this implies something about people who like it.

We love Boma's. I love doing different things you wouldn't do at home. If you are on the fence, you might want to make ADR's while you think about it. We called 180 days out and we only could pick from 6:20 or 9:55. It is very popular.

This rest. is actually one of the places on my "maybe" list. I just can't seem to get into the menu when I read it. I am not real adventurous with my tastebuds, but I do like different food if its not freakishly different. I am not big on weird spices (i.e. rosemary) or spicy foods. I can't imagine I would like this food, but everyone is raving about it. I feel like if we don't go we will be missing out on something big. I also have two kids (9&3) and I don't know if they will enjoy this food. I really don't want to take them there to eat chicken fingers if thats all they can eat because the regular menu is so bizarre....

any thoughts???

I don't mean this unkindly at all..
If you consider "rosemary" to be a *freakishly* different taste then I would stick to a restaurant that is more predictable:)

DH is a foodie and a very good cook. I appreciate good and unusual foods but don't cook so well. :) We both had high expectations for Boma and were both disappointed. I say you should go once and see what you think, because I know many people love it. It wasn't a bad meal, just not great..we did H&V (I know, much maligned here) and Cape May for dinner that trip as well as Boma, and we both preferred the others. We found Boma spicing for many dishes overly sweet. I liked the soups the best. Kids are picky and bland eaters, and they were fine with the chicken nuggets and mac & cheese.

Okay, perhaps "weird" wasn't the appropriate word. Had I known that my post was going to get picked apart over semantics, I would have selected my words much more carefully. I certainly never meant to imply that people who eat or like rosemary are "weird." For a board that's meant to share ideas about the happiest place on earth, there sure are some critical people lurking around.
Thanks to ALL the other great people who gave their opinions and advice. As I said, I think we will go ahead and try it. I'll be sure to post a report when we get back to let others know what we thought about the place. Most of you all have been super helpful.

Oh I hope I didn't offend.. I was honestly trying to help:goodvibes
I just generally find I am happier when I stick to what I know I will be comfortable with.
For example.. Our family are just not seafood eaters. I almost wish we were because other peple enjoy it so much.. but every time we try (and we do try) it is really unplesant for us.
I think you would be happier booking something with a menu that you aren't worried about.
Again.. didn't mean to offend:)

I think everyone has been trying to be helpful. Your original post did not paint you as someone who enjoyed unusual food - and so many of us have spent a lot of money, a lot of time, or a lot of "expectations" on a place at Disney because its been hyped only to end up disappointed. No one wants that to happen to you. If you don't go you won't be "missing out on something big" if you don't go. You wouldn't be the first to spend $30 to eat chicken fingers at Boma - not by a longshot.

However, it sounds like, on a subsequent post, that you really want to go because you think your husband will enjoy it. Sometimes my husband takes me out for sushi, which he doesn't like - and that is a sweet thing to do for someone.

I really hope you do enjoy it and find it worthwhile.

You are being a little sensitive. People are going on about how you described yourself. They are not being critical just saying based on your description that a common spice in North American/European cooking is not pleasant to you the more exotic pairings of Africana food may not be a pleasant expierance.

We ate at Boma in December. I have always raved about it, but I was a bit disappointed this time. On the other hand we had the lunch buffet at Tusker house and it was delicious :thumbsup2

To be honest about Boma... I say it's so-so. I'm enjoyed the food, I didn't hate it, I didn't love it either though. And the service was really mediocre. We had to ask for things twice half the time.

Sorry to add another dose of rosemary to the mix ;)... but if you think it's a weird spice (by "weird" I'm guessing you meant "unusual" - I'm not offended at all by the choice of word) then you're probably not going to enjoy Boma very much.

BUT, you will find things to eat. If you think your husband will like the more exotic food and you can make do with salad, fruit, and items from the kids buffet, then give it a try !

Who knows. You may even try a few unusual items and like them. By the way, I hate the taste of rosemary but loved the food at Boma :)
