So what if you won the lottery?

Here's one for the gang......

Let's suppose you won the lottery. For discussion sake let's say it was $3M. Let's also suppose there are no nuts on this board who would say something like "I'd still work" (yeah right!)

Considering taxes, a Porsche, boat, new house, or what ever excites you etc. how much would you blow on DVC? And more importantly would you blow it all on one resort? We all know Rich would try to buy OKW outright!

I think I would try to have enough points to stay at the best room at each resort at the peak season for one week. I also would do that for each resort so I would have the 11th month window at each. I haven't figured out the points yet (I'm sure someone will) but you get the drift.

How about you? :jester:

I would buy enough points so I could stay in a GrandVilla everytime I went. It would be so much fun to go to WDW and not have to worry about money at all :sunny:

I would also try to convince disney to come up with an LP (Lifetime pass v. Annual Pass). I bet their actuaries could have fun with that. :p

Now that is a GREAT idea!!! I lifetime pass to coincide with the life of your DVC. I would buy them. Say $6000.00 and you would get an UPHP for as many people in your party with each reservation.

Disney came up with this idea to help people save on their accomadations with the DVC, they should come up with a similar plan to help us with the park passes, the costs of those can really eat into your vacation budget. If I could pay a 1 time upfront fee, and not have to worry about money for passes ever agian...woohoo...we would be down there all the time..I might even add on to my DVC. It could be a win/win for Disney.

As for me winning the lottery...after I paid of my mortgage, purchased my dream home, put enough money away for each of my 3 children's college education and wedding, purchased a new car, paid off all of our debt and put a little something away for our "golden" years, then YES I would buy more Disney points. Not too much more. I might double what I own now. I would also buy a contract for my sister.

Thanks for this question...now you have me dreaming and I am going to end up buying lottery tickets for tonight!!!

If I won the lottery, I would buy enough points for two week contracts at peak season for my two sisters and my brother. We have been going as one big family (19) every two years for awhile now and all of us LOVE WDW. Of course, I would still like to go alone with DH once in awhile, so I might buy myself some additional points as well.

And, after 35 years of teaching, I wouldn't keep my day job, I'd finally be able to retire!

I'm your twin! This is exactly what I would have posted but I think I'd need more than 3mil. :o

Is that 3 mil after or b4 taxes?:jester: After everything, ie house, car, college fund, and all that, I would buy enough points for a 3 week at peak season in the gv. Then I'd add on :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :smooth:

I'm with Loubon, I would buy multiple points at multiple resorts to fit in the booking windows. I would also do several weeks at WDW every year. :p

In fact, the multi-state Mega Millions game that covers Illinois, and you folks in New Jersey, had a $44-million jackpot last night. I had a ticket! Goodness if I won that, I'd buy OKW for Rich!
:p    :earseek:

I'd buy more points at BCV and huge contract at OKW (or SSR) for 2 weeks at the GV, and enough points for a 2BR at VWL over Xmas.

After paying off the other bills and such.

Not sure what or how much I'd buy, but I do know that I'd be hanging out at WDW, not on the DIS! :)

Let;s see if it was 3m after taxes....I'd build a new house, pay all bills, purchase a sports car, put money away for secondary education and college for my 4 kids....

Sub total...
House $700,000 (includes demo of old)
Bills $20,000 (includes car payments
Sports car $70,000 ( not sure of the type)
Secondary Education $150,000 (we don't have a public school system
College $500,000

1.5 Million roughly

OK I could use another $100,000 worth of points....

1.6 Million

I think I should invest the remainder so i don't have to run off to work everyday...

Already promised Mom&Dad, Sister&BIL, Aunt&Uncle, Cousin&Wife that if I ever won the lottery they would all be getting DVC contracts. They could choose the number of points up to 500, but they would have to pay the maintenance fees. They all liked that idea.

I only have 150 points now, so I'd probably add another 450 for myself.

Hmmmm! Funny you should ask. I have already told everyone I work with that I could retire if I hit the lottery for $3 million. I coiuldn't do it for $1 or $2 million. It has to be no less than $3 million. Here's why:

Pay off existing mortgage
Pay off new car loan
Purchase new car for DH
Pay off last year of priviate high school for DS
Pay for 4 years of college for DS
Pay 4 years of grad school for DS
Buy a winter home in FL

Oh yeah . . . and definitely would buy more points!

This thread made me think I should start the office lottery pool again!

Let me see, we'd build a new home, pay off daughter and SIL home, pay off son and DIL home, buy DVC for both our kids and for about 5 other people in our family that love Disney as much as we do and go as often as we do. We would retire so fast it would be unbelievable, and of course we would buy points at all the differant DVC resorts. And we would invest some to keep us going as we get a little older.

I work for the Post Office, and a girl I worked with DH won Megabucks up here in MA. I forget for how much, they get $170,000/year, so I think it was around 4 million. He worked for the Post Office too (played his Social Security #). He retired, 1 year after hitting. And she is now a supervisor for the PO. Still working - 5 years later. As she said she is only 45, now, and the money runs out in 20 years. They bought a new house, that's it.

If I won the lottery, I'd be VERY surprised, because, simply, I never play the lottery.

I'm of the opinion that as the saying goes:

"The lottery is a tax on people who aren't very good at mathematics." :p

For those who play $1.00 a week just for the 'fun' of it, fine, it's cheap entertainment. Just remember at that rate (lottery using 6 numbers out of 46, which is probably low for most lotteries today), it will take almost 10 million weeks before you win that $3 million dollar lottery. (That's 192,000 years) And games with a 'power ball', the odds are even much longer than that.

I remember a cartoon a few years ago when the surgeon general declared smokers had a 50% chance of getting some kind of smoking disease during their lifetime. The cartoon showed a man and woman, both heavily smoking. He's reading the newspaper with the 50% headline on it. She mentions it. He replies "Won't happen to me!". Next frame, she shouts, "Hey, the lottery is up to $200 million. He, "Quick, go buy a ticket!"

As for some 30 year old buying $20 worth of lottery tickets every week, go do the math and see what $20 a week will do if put into an IRA (Roth) or 401K for 30 years. Now that's a sure thing.

I wasn't able to retire at age 55 because of a lottery!

and the money runs out in 20 years.
This is quite true. I remember reading an article about a year back about a 45 (?)year who won the lottery ($1 million) at age 25 or so. Back in the very first days of lotteries. (Early 80's ?). Got $50,000 a year for 20 years. Didn't work and didn't invest. Didn't develop any kind of career track. So at age 45 the money stopped. He was working for minimum wage at a McDonalds or something like that, and looking for a better job but couldn't get one because he had no work history. He also had no social security history of payments either so wasn't going to get any sort of social security unless he got the required quarters in, and even at that they would be a low pay.

However......Finally, IF someone gave me a lottery ticket for a Christmas present and it won, then I'd definitely buy some more points. :smooth: :p

Gee Bill all I thought you'd do is calculate the points needed to fulfill my dream! What if there was a lottery with points as the prize would you play then?

BTW I don't buy lottery tickets either, I just like thought provoking questions!;)

PS Do you work for Batesville Casket? They are a customer of ours and I see you are from Batesville and your name is (Cask) Bill. Just curious to see if it is a small world after all....
