So what happened to your last snow shovel?

I always wonder what happens to all the snow shovels from the previous winter season, or even the last snow storm. It seems that just before every snow storm, a mass of people rush out to buy new snow shovels....but what happened the one you had last year? You had to have one for the last snow storm, right? What about the one that you had for the last snow storm? Anyone ever wonder this, or am I the only one? I understand that shovels break or even get stolen, but to have this many broken or stolen just doesn't fly with me. I'm just curious, maybe this is more of a rhetorical question than anything...but genuinely curious.

I can only speak for myself, but I used to live in a condo that shoveled the snow for me. Now DH and I live in a house and WE have to shovel all that snow. I do have a little shovel, but we'll need a bigger one if we get a lot of snow this winter. So we'll be picking one up on our next trip to Home Depot!

What we really want to do is buy a snow thrower! But that will wait until next year, we don't have the money right now.

Ours are hanging in the garage. We have broken shovels before and needed new ones and we have bought more since the kids help shovel now. We use our shovels all year round for scooping up leaves, etc. as well as snow.

I always wonder the same exact thing! Why the mad rush? I always picture that most of the people rushing to get them already have 18 more in their shed, but just feel the need to go out and get another just because that's what they're "supposed" to do!!

I smartened up and moved from NH to FL 2.5 years ago ... I was MORE than happy to give my snow shovels, snow blower, windshield ice scrapers, snow rake (for the roof) and extra rock salt to family and friends.

(Oh... I guess that wasn't the answer you were looking for... sorry.)

When DH moved from Cleveland to SC in the 80's he got rid of his snow shovel thinking he would never need it. We have snow about every other year and 2 years ago 18 inches in 3 hours. We finally bought a shovel and a sled after that and have not seen a snowflake since.

I will be one buying a new one this year. I have two, one for the front and one for the back patio(dog needs a cleared off space too). I go them out of the shed last week. I grabbed the newer one and it came out ok. I grabbed the older one and as I pulled it out I heard this clatter and looked down and I was holding the handle and the lade part was laying on the ground. The dog of course had run clear across the yard, big defender of me that he is.lol
I will say my dad gets hired out to clean out rentals and repo houses. You would not believe the stuff people leave behind. He has had more mowers than you can count, but he has a friend get any running that weren't already running and he uses those to mow the yards.(he loves to tell the story of going in with a 19 inch blade and coming out with a 13 inch blade) We now own more shovels than we will ever use. We have a basketball hoop you can move, a smoker, we gave away the gas grill, I have lots of cool yard art. The kids love when Gpa pulls up with his truck loaded and they get to pick through for goodies.....oh yea!! Thanks dad, more stuff to find laying in the yard....The one thing my dad always finds though are all the Xmas ornaments. I guess the people just buy new every time they move. Our bestest so far is someone left a huge pile of tongue and groove knotty pine. We stained and poly'd it and have a gorgeous ceiling in the family room downstairs now.
Now that I think about it, I will call my dad and see if he has any extra snow shovels and save me a trip to the store......

We just bought this house over the summer. The previous owners left theirs so we will not be buying new ones. They only moved 10 minutes away so i know they will need them. I guess they will be some of the people frantically buying them soon.

We did the mad rush last year - moved from Mississippi and didn't have one. Then DH paid a kid to do it and my neighbor shoveled after DH deployed, so the shovel never did get used until this winter.

I was out buying a new snow shovel this past weekend!

Seems when Ex moved out last summer ~ he felt the need to take both the shovel and the rake with him. Now he's living with his mother and has no need for one...then there's me running to the nearest Home Depot to buy all new.

Confession time . . . my DH left it laying on the concrete pad by the garage door, it has snowed 10 inches here, and the shovel is hidden by snow, so we have to buy another one so we can clear the area and find our original one!!

if it's only 10 inches, it would be easier, quicker and cheaper to just walk the pad dragging your feet until ya find the shovel...

Probably, but there's so much junk out there at the moment (we're finishing our basement and remodeling our laundry room and that's where the "discards" go), that I'd be afraid of what else I would step on!

hmmm, I noticed that too when the new media frenzy does the first snow coverage, they go to the supermarkets and then to Home Depot and HD is always cleared out of snow shovels.

Ours is still in the garage from last year and this summer during my garage sale excursion i picked up a FREE snow shovel. Yeah!!

I have a "mini shovel" that I used to keep in my trunk in college to dig my car out. (I, evidently, was teh only smart one with a freakin' shovel...so I lent it out for $5 a pop,., heheheh)

anywho...it's WAY too small to actually shovel a driveway/stairs with...so DH uses it to fling dog poop into the woods too. heheheh

We've still got ours from last year, but the last (heavy wet) snowfall last year cracked the blade of it, so we bought a new one this year. Seems like we have to replace it every 3-4 years; same thing with our roof rakes.
