OT - LOVE YOUR SIGGIE.....LET'S GO FLYERS!

Come over to the hockey thread....we are nice....no boarding, hip checking, interference calls:rotfl2:

However, I feel a slashing call coming on.........:woohoo:............a (4) minute one!

Don't you guys understand that when you banned masses of people, and refused to give them the decency of an explanation of why they were banned, you created a culture of fear, paranoia and conspiracy theories?

The man's got a point, I'm sorry to say. I guess I thought message boards were message boards but clearly there's underlying office politics going on.

I was going to post this on the roll call thread but it was locked while I was in the process of writing it. I wanted to post it here because the idea that a lot of posters seem to believe that one, or a group, of the banned people were involved in hacking the DIS bugs me. I was just trying to share my experience.

I was wondering if it just has to do with IP addresses, or things that the webmasters can see that had to do with the hacking. They don't know who to trust, so a wide swath of posters were banned..... just thinking out loud trying to find a "rhyme or reason."

What makes people think that there was any hacking? I seriously do not think there was any hacking happening. I think there was a programming error made by one of the DIS tech people or WMs. They caught it and fixed it, but then they started erasing any mention of it on the boards which didn't help the situation. It's not like people are going to forget it happened!

This is what I experienced that night:

I was reading on both this site and the Voldemort site (site-which-can-not-be-named). While on the other site any link to the DIS stopped actually taking you to the DIS post, it took you back to the referring site and a particular post there. People there were actually laughing at it, in part because of the thread they chose to direct you to. THe site owner there changed the text of the first post of that thread and the DIS WMs or whoever changed the redirect to a different part of the boards there (the redirect happened when you clicked on a link there and it brought you back, nothing happening on the DIS yet). Shortly after that change the mass redirect happened. I clicked on a link on the DIS and instead of a DIS thread, I got a Voldemort site thread. At first I thought it was my computer because I had both sites open in different windows. I closed them both and reopened the DIS and the same thing happened. I cleared my cookies and my cache and it happened again. I started thinking this was the new way of being told you were banned from the DIS! A minute later the DIS was working fine again, no mention of what happened. All in all, maybe 3 or 4 minutes of being unable to access this site.

Because the redirecting started only on the Voldemort site and then spread to this site, I think it was a programming error. They were tinkering and they tinkered with the wrong setting accidentally. When they realized the goof up, they corrected it. Of course after that it was being discussed and laughed about on the Voldemort site and people started being banned. The big problem then became that rather than posting something that said sorry for the error, won't happen again, TPTB here decided to poof any mention of the redirect. people were worried they had picked up a virus, people were worried about their passwords and account security. No comments came though and people got the message, this is now a Voldemort topic.

I don't think it was hacking for several reasons:
  1. there was obviously tinkering being done on DIS settings to redirect any link with that as the referring site and this was happening immediately before the redirect from here
  2. if someone was going to hack to direct people to the Voldemort site, don't you think they'd redirect you to the board with all the action rather than the main page that listed boards that hadn't been used there for years (but are now in use as the banned posters are chatting and trip planning there)?
  3. there is still redirecting happening on links posted on that site to the DIS only now you are taken to the Teletubbies site, a site which is run by PBS. PBS depends on public funding and through donations from viewers. Their web site, like any site, has a bandwidth limit and I would hate to think that these redirects are adding to their bandwith and increasing costs for PBS. If it was a hacker from there, they'd have left those links alone.
  4. If it was a hacker, the problem wouldn't have been fixed so quickly.
  5. the chances of someone hacking and doing the exact same thing that they were doing on the other site at the exact same time they were doing it, so essentially WMs from here AND the hacker both logged in to the admin panel for the boards at the same time and making changes are beyond slim.
  6. why would TPTB here not say "we were hacked but are safe now, no need to fear for viruses or security." Saying that wouldn't cause a legal problem. Saying we were hacked and we think it was by these people and we're going after them guns blazing would, but not just saying it happened and we've restored order and see no indication or problems wouldn't. Nor would saying we were hacked and we suggest changing your passwords ASAP.
  7. if there really was going to be a legal battle over hacking and redirecting, wouldn't they want to leave those threads in place as evidence of the DISers affected by it? At the very least just lock the threads but not poof them.

That's just my take. I could be wrong, but given the circumstances with changes happening to links from there first, I feel pretty darn confident in saying there was no hacking. I just hate to see implications that one or more of the banned posters were involved in some sinister plot to hack the DIS. I think that is so far off base it is laughable but it seems that there are posters who do believe that.

Norge, i don't know you, but I just thought I'd tell you adieu. Cause it won't be long now!!

This is a record for me because I rarely read more than 1 or 2 pages of a long thread but this thread captured my attention because of the input of some long time Diser's...after reading everything here I have one question for those that got banned in defense of their friends, throwing themselves on the sword so to speak, isn't it better to stay and fight the fight instead of taking yourself out of the game....

They can't answer. They are banned.

Thanks Mark! I don't post much, but I'm an avid reader so I'd like to tell you that I have always enjoyed your posts. :goodvibes

Well, one good thing came out of this huge fiasco. I never even knew about the site-which-must-not-be-named until today!

The way I'm interpreting it, TPTB got a little snarky when tinkering with the boards and decided to make a point. In doing so, things got out of hand. Instead of owning up to it like adults and admitting they made a mistake, they decided to hide behind talk of "lawyers" and instead ban roughly 100 highly esteemed members, many of whom had only fallen victim to TPTB's tricky linking. In doing so, they're only harming themselves in the end.

Mayor, it's very difficult to have your voice heard when any thread that mentions the incident is immediately deleted. Several people posted respectful questions which were deleted in a matter of minutes, so people just got fed up.

And just for the record,

THE DIS WAS NOT HACKED!!

The previous poster was spot on, this site was redirecting links and messed up. Everything that happened afterwards was just a cover up. I'm sorry if the webmasters feel I'm being disrespectful by posting this, I'm not, I'm just being honest.

Well thank you kathy! I haven't posted much over here in a couple years. I still read a lot too though. Love the theme parks board. When I get a hankering, I can read over there and fill the void, so to speak until we get to go again.

Blessings!

I've checked in as often as I can...in both places, but my life outside the web has been pretty chaotic lately. I've tried to join in on some of the threads that I've caught questioning this whole mess, but more often than not, by the time I get my reply typed out and hit "Post", the thread itself is gone. I have been, and continue to be, a member of both boards for some time. I have no idea why I haven't been banned.

I do know that many of the banned Dis'ers were much nicer than me. I've had a few warnings and even gotten points once. Sarcasm comes naturally to me and is often difficult to refrain from here. Some of the banned have never had either warnings or points. Yes, sometimes the 'other' place can be a bit rough. I like that about it. I'm not immune to having snarky comments made about me there. That's okay. I'm a big girl and I can handle myself.

There are some Dis'ers that I have defended 'over there' in the past. Some of those same posters have now become so nasty that I regret having done that. It's hurtful to watch others be so gleeful about what has been such an injustice to so many of my friends. So, to those of you that applies to (and you know exactly who you are)....the next time you see a thread over there attacking something stupid you've posted here....look closely, because it may well be me who started the thread.

I think that several people attempted to do just this, and it didn't work out so well. While it sounds good, it is really like middleschoolers taking a petition to the principal. It doesn't usually amt. to much.

I think that had people been listened to, and emails answered, this thread wouldn't be necessary. I can't imagine anyone MEANT for it to turn out as it has. It is just that stinkin' snowball affect.

I hope that someone here, eventually comes to the conclusion that it is unhealthy to try to control people to that degree.

If the DIS were hacked, it'd have had to been hacked by someone from the Voldemort board, right?

Then why ban like 100 people? And why only ban some of the Voldemort board users and not all of them?

My guess is it wasn't hacked, and personal politics came into play. Users that had annoyed the owners of this board in the past suddenly became banned. Those who hadn't got to stay.

Does everyone use the same username on both boards? Did people admit who they were? How else would they know who to ban? Or did they just ban the people who used the same username on both, or who admitted their DIS username?

Seriously guys, the Dis wasn't hacked. This is all office politics and cover-ups
