So... WAS the Deluxe Resort Worth it?

About a year ago, I asked whether a Deluxe resort was worth it. The feedback was split down the middle. The ultimate response was that "it depends on your family."

After a less-than-stellar stay at Port Orleans French Quarters (which I still, to this day, recommend—it was just a poor stay that left a sour taste in our mouth, plus it was getting a bit stale after 3+ stays) we thought that maybe it was time to try Deluxe. The Beach Club had always been on our bucket list, but the cost was just too much. I was in college when we started doing our Christmas trip and wasn't able to pay my own way. The trip was a present from our parents. Now that I'm working, my sister and I agreed to pay our own way. Split 4 ways, the trip was much more doable. Still, we had our convictions. We'd be paying for the resort alone what we used to pay for our entire trip. This, along with the fact that the holiday fell on a weekend meant higher airfare and a more expensive trip overall.

But we saved. And after an 8-night stay, here's what we think...

The Room
We usually go 12/24-1/2. Instead, this year we'd go 12/24-1/1. Because we were staying one less night, we decided to go "all in" and spend for the water/pool view.

Upon making our reservation, we had one request: a full balcony, preferably on a higher floor. Upon checking in, we received the higher floor, but only with a juliet balcony. The balcony was one thing I was really looking forward to. We had filed a complaint the previous year due to the maid being extremely rude to our family (something I don't have to go into detail) so we didn't really wanna complain, at the risk of being "serial complainers." Knowing that we checked in early, I figured other rooms may be available, though. I went down and explained in a polite manner that we were really hoping for a full balcony. It'd be fine if it wasn't available, but I asked if there were any other rooms available. After a little searching, the front desk CM moved us from the 3rd floor to the 4th, this time overlooking the quiet pool. The room had a full balcony and a gorgeous view of the boardwalk. We were able to see the fireworks from DHS, but unfortunately EPCOT was blocked by the side building. No problem.

Overall, if you blindfolded me and brought me to the room, nothing about it truly stood out. Outside of the balcony, it feels like any moderate resort room at Disney, only slightly larger. We did get to sit outside and view the fireworks a bit, but if you play your cards right, you can do this virtually anywhere. If you're paying for a Deluxe (this one, at least) just for the room alone, then no—it's not worth it.

The Service
The Service was among the best we've ever received at Disney. We were greeted immediately upon stepping off the Magical Express. The greeter even knew our names (I'd assume from the MagicBands.) The front desk accommodated our request for another room with a smile. Walking through the resort, every cast member, even the mousekeepers all greeted us with a smile. Our maid was very good with cleaning our room and keeping us stocked with towels, toiletries, etc.

Another big thing was our package. We sent down a package of toiletries ahead of time. In past visits, it was seamless, as we always stayed mod. Now, there was a convention center and we'd have to go pick it up. My mom stayed on top of things and called ahead. She's a bit of a worry wort (understandably so - all her deodorant, etc. was in that package.) Upon checking in, my mom asked where the convention center was. The CM replied "no worries, we've already fetched the package for you."

I wouldn't pay extra JUST for service, but it certainly made the cost feel worth it.

Amenities
As I mentioned above, the room amenities were pretty standard. I was so happy when I checked the forecast and saw that it'd be in the 80s Christmas week. Extra holiday pounds and all, I threw on my bathing suit and went to the pool shortly after checking in. We laid in the lazy river for about an hour. A cold front was due to sweep into Orlando (luckily it only lasted one day) so we tried to get in one day at the quiet pool, then I made it my business to go down the slide at least once.

The pool was outstanding, although, I didn't see them checking MBs for guests. Really, anyone could have come in, although I'm sure big brother is watching.

Is the resort worth it for the pool alone? I think so. You're pretty much getting a water park inside your resort. If you have kids, you can probably skip the water parks or the parks one day and just head to the pool. That's a money saver right there.

Location

Here's the real winner. My mom mentioned that the location paid for itself. I agree. We've discussed staying at Poly one year and my mom brought up a good point. She mentioned how she loved how she could easily walk to the Boardwalk and grab a snack or breakfast in the morning. Poly doesn't really have that. On top of this, EPCOT was a 5-minute walk away.

On NYE, we tried eating late at Yachtsman then walking to EPCOT around 10:30. We just weren't feeling the crowds, so we went back and watched the fireworks from the boat stop near the lighthouse. We were treated to the EPCOT fireworks, DHS fireworks, then the Star Wars fireworks. It was a prime location without the crazy crowds. We discussed that should we return next year, we'll stay out of the parks all day and just enjoy the resort.

Overall
Is it worth the cost? Well, it depends. I still think Deluxes are far too astronomically priced. Sure, you may manage to get a discounted room, but for the time we go, it's far too expensive. However, the proof is in the location. You simply can't beat walking to EPCOT, having the Boardwalk area RIGHT THERE for food, drinks, etc. and the fact that you could walk to DHS if you really wanted to. My sister and I did this one morning and beat my parents, who took the boat.

Our friends are DVC owners at Boardwalk. One joked that "once you go Deluxe, it's really really hard to go back moderate or Value."

We've discussed going back next year. We played around with the cost of renting DVC, but ultimately, I think we'll just spring for the room.

We have done Mods and Deluxe. I have to say that renting DVC points makes the Deluxe the same price as the mods, so we now go that route. This year we are planning a split stay. VWL for 4 nights and then BCV for the other 4.

I don't mind the Moderates, but if we can have Deluxe for the same price, I don't see why I would go back.

I agree. The only thing keeping us from renting points is: 1) the uncertainty because it's such a popular time 12/24-1/1... 2) we fell in love with the view and we're not sure what kind of view the DVC gets and 3) we feel like if we're paying for it, we may as well get maid service every day. We're also timid about the pull-out couch, although we've heard it's just as comfortable as a regular bed.

Let's just put it this way: BCV has no bookable view categories for DVC. If there were any group of view large enough to make a category that could be charged for/differentiated, they would. They don't.

BWV has bookable views.

We did deluxe for the first time with a split between Poly and BC. We fell in LOVE with the BC. The pool, the walk to Epcot...just amazing. We had a standard room so our view was of the roof but we go in the dead of summer and don't hang out on the balcony.

I only want to stay deluxe now but we go end of August when rates are much lower and there are lots of deals out there so the price isn't anywhere near Christmas week.

I would definitely look into renting DVC to save money!

You described all of the reasons we love staying at the Epcot area resorts! To us, that does make the cost worth it. We were able to find a discount for our December dates that made it a very easy decision.

I agree with you that the location is mainly what makes a deluxe resort worth it. I've stayed both moderate and deluxe and feel like I could go either way based on amenities and service. But, the deluxe resorts normally win out due to convenient locations. It is so nice to be able to walk to the parks or hop on the monorail for a quick ride! We normally rent DVC points as the room view isn't as big of a deal to us. That puts the price down to what we would pay for a moderate. Our week long stay at the Beach Club this month came out to ~$200/night!

I've been wondering if deluxe worth cost? We will be staying at GF for the first time this year because I can finally afford it and it's on my bucket list. In the past we have stayed at moderates and AoA. I've been thinking. What am I getting at GF besides the monorail that will be worth the extra cost??

Yep, that's what sold us. Well, to be honest, when we first started going to WDW, the only game in town was the deluxe resorts and we wanted to stay on site so that was it. After so many years of staying deluxe, to bump down to moderate or value just didn't work. I do split stays often with the first night or two at a moderate then I switch over to an Epcot resort for the rest of the trip. I tried values for the first night or two and just couldn't enjoy it. Epcot is our favorite park and, for us, it's worth the cost. Now I'll shop discounts like no bodies business and have never, ever paid rack rate. We have even branched out to the Swan/Dolphin which we like just as well but sometimes I can get one of the WDW Epcot resorts for less since we drive and have to pay the parking fee at Swan/Dolphin. I actually have a split stay coming up in March between CSR and BW (both of which are my least favorite resorts in the categories but hey, I got them for the least amount of money so it is what it is). I toyed with staying at WL instead of BW and could have gotten it for about $75 less a night but just couldn't make myself leave my beloved Epcot resorts (especially since we are going to be there for F&G). I've gone the rent DVC route but frankly for a studio, you don't really save a lot of money and not having that guarantee of cancelling just doesn't work for me.

I have stayed at AoA, POR, CBR, WL, AKL, YC, and SSR. For my next trip I rented points at the GF, which is on my bucket list. Renting DVC points is the only way I could afford to stay there. I have stayed at all levels of Disney resorts and I've enjoyed every single one. Each resort has its own flavor that makes the trip unique. I love the variety and enjoy experiencing the differences. Is deluxe worth it? Well, there is no definitive answer as it depends on the person/family. Things Deluxes offer that moderates and values do not:
Location
Signature dining on site
Slightly larger rooms
Double sinks
More comfortable beds
Interior hallways

Are any of these essential to me? No. Will I still spring for a deluxe sometimes? Yes. Have my trips at moderates and AoA been just as enjoyable? Yes. I will continue to stay at all levels of Disney resorts.

Mostly when I do choose deluxe it's because I want the experience of trying something new and that is what makes it worth it to me. I don't find that the deluxe hotels are really that luxurious compared to hotels outside of Disney. AKL had the biggest WOW factor for me of the deluxes I've stayed at. I'm not rushing to go back to WL or YC although I did enjoy them. We'll see how I feel after I try GF! Honestly, I'm equally looking forward to trying POFQ sometime!

Exactly this. I've tried all levels. And while I prefer to stick to the Deluxes and Moderates due to room size preferences, lately I've been only been able to afford the Moderates. Which, honestly, have all been great. So yeah, if in the future I can afford a Deluxe, so be it. But I don't feel like I'm "settling" when I stay at Moderates.

While I'm not sure about other mods, CBR does have double sinks. Beds were also as comfy as BWI and comfier than what we had at BC. Definitely better than the value though. And AoA at least has interior hallways.

Looking forward to our first time at BC this summer. It is a splurge but the location and pool convinced me. I'm not really doubting that it will be worth it.

Staying deluxe completely changes the feel of your vacation. I've stayed at port Orleans riverside and art of animation for a couple nights. it was enjoyable, and a nice place to sleep. But when I switched to the Grand Floridian and Polynesian, the vacation went to another level. You feel like you are in the middle of the magic. Getting off the monorail from magic kingdom gets me excited everytime as a Disney fan. Seeing your resort across the lagoon from the park is a beautiful thing. looking out the window to your room and seeing the grounds of the hotel you always wanted to stay in and hearing the horns of the boats that take you to the magic kingdom make memories really special. The bigger rooms, the smell of the lobbies, the fact that you actually have time to rest in the middle of the day (and you can still hear the train from magic kingdom) and not spend hours waiting for transportation makes a night and day difference. Is it worth it? Yes. Unless you are there just for the parks and not to relax. Its a completely different vacation

We just stayed at the a Deluxe for the first time. I have to say it was pretty awesome. We did a split stay at the AKL and Polynesian. If you have time to actually spend at the resort I would say a deluxe is the way to go. We went for 11 days which gave us time to see what the resort had to offer. Obviously the location to different parks was great but to be able to walk to dinner was really cool. While at AKL we ate at Boma and at the Polynesian we ate at Ohana twice. We rented the points like others have and that really made the decision to stay at a deluxe easier.

Worth it is subjective, but you get a great lobby and nice decor with the largest standard rooms.
You also get more dining (including a 24 hour QS) and shopping than any other resort.

Larger rooms, location, monorail, popular dining on site.

We loved the location of BWI and can't say there was anything about the hotel that was all that luxurious but the convenience of getting to the parks was worth the price!

Another thing I'll add: we noticed one night that you can literally walk from the bus stop to your room when it's raining and not get wet. It's completely covered. Can't say the same for EPCOT but if you're leaving the park and it starts down-pouring, you can theoretically stay under the bus stop, board the bus and get back to your room without getting (too) wet.
