I've had it without the bananas due to an allergy. I asked if strawberries could be substituted for the bananas and the chef said he couldn't put them inside the Tonga toast but gave me a small side plate of them.
I hate bananas but love Tonga Toast. I ask them to leave the bananas out and they do it. There were two times at Kona Kafe that I asked for strawberries instead and they were out of this world but for the last 7 years they have told me no. I don't put the strawberry sauce or syrup on it, just butter.

Wow Mousefan38, I had about given up even asking, so I have 3 ressies there in September, I'll ask everyday. The funny thing is the reason they give for not doing it is because the strawberries get mushy, what do they think happens with bananas?
I've never had it but it's on the list of things to try. If it has changed, it won't deter me from trying it in the future. I am more concerned about it being just too much sugar & too sweet for my taste more than the type of bread which is probably why I haven't tried yet.
It is way to sweet and personally can't see how such a slight change in bread types is going to make any difference in it whatsoever. It will still be incredibly sweet be it with sour dough or french bread, which to me are just about the same dang bread once it's dipped in batter, fried and coated in sugar
I was just there about a month ago and Tonga Toast is always on my list of things to eat. I didn't notice any difference at all. Going back this summer and it will again be on my list.
