So they changed Tonga Toast

Not the Tonga Toast!!! Somebody - anybody - please tell us about the Tonga toast!!! RIP my little piece of Polynesian Paradise! :littleangel:image.jpeg .

I loved it! But my 5 year old said it was too sweet. They also have AMAZING pancakes. If you have a least 2 people in your party order both and share :)
Too sweet for a 5 year old? I didn't think such a thing existed.

Along these lines I don't think the bread matters. Sugar is the only ingredient I really notice.

Aww shucks! I was debating adding on a Kona breakfast on our departure day to try it. We may opt for another breakfast unless the reviews say otherwise.
Kona is our favorite for breakfast and one of must dos.. Not because of the Tonga Toast (I don't care for it), but for the other great options on the menu! The food is so good for breakfast, with my favorite being the macadamia pineapple pancakes - so delicious! I get the pineapples on the side, but the macadamia nut butter and macadamia nuts throughout the pancakes are so amazing! And they have the best coffee - the Kona press pot is very good.

The pancakes did look yummy as do their other food offerings! It's my first trip back since my actual first trip when I was 10 so I've never had the original and due to raves wanted to try it, as I've been making my restaurant choices based on my own tastes as well as unanimous positive reviews. My ADR date is this Wednesday so I still have time to discuss our plans. Regardless we are going here for dinner on arrival day so maybe we will just bookend our trip with the breakfast.

If you are looking at other options, I'd also suggest the Grand Floridian Cafe for breakfast. That and Kona are my favorite non-character breakfasts in WDW. They are both great places for a more relaxed and quiet breakfast, with great food. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so I always make it a point to hit up both each trip.

Yes I was looking into GF as well! Blah, there needs to be more time in the day! Haha

I'm allergic to bananas, so sadly, have never had Tonga Toast. I've always hoped that one day they might offer an alternate filling fruit, but considering the cult following if the original, it's not likely :(

Little hint with the Tonga toast...when I had it the only real sweet thing about it I though was the strawberry topping they give u for it. I think I much rather of had regular syrup or eaten it plain, but what did I know when I first ordered it lol...I just dumped all that strawberry stuff on lol

Totally agree with this statement. Try dipping a piece in the compote before you pour it over everything because a little goes a long way. This is also good to share if another person gets something savory.

I was planning to order this for my first time this October. I do like sourdough and French bread so it should be fine. I am worried about it being so sweet. I think I'll just dip a little with the strawberry. Husband is getting the sampler breakfast so I could share some of his savory.

I finally had the Tonga Toast on our last visit in October 2015. It was our first visit to Kona for breakfast so I HAD to try it. It was very good without the strawberry topping and was sweet enough without syrup - so I do recommend it. Still, I don't see any need to have it again soon as there are some other items on the menu I'd like to try. I'm trying to picture it in my head made with french bread as opposed to sour dough, only because when I think of french bread I think of baguettes or otherwise round loaf - so it would be a totally different presentation.

Back in the day, PORR had breakfast in Boatwrights, and they had a stuffed French toast that was similar to Tonga toast made with a baguette, and it was pretty great. So if the new Tonga toast is similar, I'd be cool with that.

I tired tonga toast for the first time 2 weeks ago and loved it!! We stayed at the poly only one night after a cruise but I had Tonga toast both days from Capt. Cooks. I have no idea about different bread, I just know I can't wait until I am back there in November to have it again!

Not allergic but I dislike bananas so I too wish they would offer an alternative. I have had great french toast with various types of bread including both sourdough and french so to those who love tonga toast give the new version a try.

deep fried custard soaked bread stuffed with bananas and coated with cinnamon sugar will probably taste substantially the same made with sourdough or french bread. Both have very similar textures. Someone with very sensitive sense of taste might detect a slight difference but with all of that fat and sugar it's not likely to be a huge difference.
