got home from work to find DH has booked us a week in WDW in january.
never been this time of year before so what do i need to know? hows the weather and the crowds?

Assuming you aren't there on New Year's Eve/Day, I think January is a fantastic time to visit. We went January '12 for the marathon weekend (my first and probably last Goofy Challenge). This year the marathon is the weekend of 1/12-1/13, but even then I doubt crowds will be bad.

You will have a blast. Be prepared for hot and cold weather. A few long sleeve t-shirts and a light jacket or hooded sweat shirt should be good. Its too cold to swim in my opinion, but there were other people doing it. Bring your suit and decide for yourself once you get there.

We're going 19-26th jan. avoid new years and marathon weekend :)
We've been in may once, November twice and September three times. Does anyone know roughly how crowds compare to September?

we went on the 26th January for two weeks quite a few years ago now but I remember it well. Lets put it this way, pack for all weathers. We woke up to ice on the ground a few times, by the afternoon it was in the upper 60's low 70's, then it got cold again in the evening. Layers are the way forward. We was there in September this year and I thought the crowds in Jan were less then Sept. I remember that the crowds were low. Not our most fav time of the year to go as prefer it a tad warmer but we really enjoyed it all the same. It was good to experience the parks in the winter and would be more then happy if I'd come home to find my other half had booked a week in January:)

We are at OKW from 21st Jan, And we were there the same time this year.

This year is the hottests its been in Jan for a few years, we always go this time of year, but have also been in October and December.

It was high 70's low 80's this year which we werent really preparred for. lol. I would reiterate what others have said, plan for both. Def need a jumper, even a coat on some nights. Was essential for us on the boats to DTD at night - not exactly open water, but it def makes a hell of difference when you pull into the lagoon area of DTD.
