I think we're a family that would rather ride our bikes than spend all that on a golf cart (that won't even fit all 5 of us anyway).
Are there places to put your bike like if you ride it to the marina to catch a boat to MK or at the front if you go there to catch a bus somewhere? and if so, can you lock your bikes there?

I hadn't even thought about this until someone mentioned it in another thread but didn't really give details -so now I'm curious!

There is a bike rack and plenty of fence to lock bikes up at both the Settlement and Outpost. The pool area has a bike rack as well.

Bring bikes its a great place to ride. They have places to put and lock them up. Just bring a lock and put lights on your bikes it gets pretty dark there at night.

Hmm, lights on the bikes?
I think we might have to compromise and only ride them during daylight... after we come back for supper we'll just have to WALK wherever we want to go after that. :rotfl: I might put lights on mine though- since I tend to be the nightowl and might want to venture (wherever) later at night. Thanks for the tip!

As mentioned, just bring a good lock and use it when parking the bikes. When there is no bike rack, we just lock the bikes together. Also, you might not want a light on the bike but just make sure you have a helmet on every noggin.

We have never used a golf cart while at FW. Biking or walking and now running for me since I am working my way towards the 2010 Marathon has always been our MO. When our grandchildren were young I would pull them in a trailer.

Used to be lots more bikes compared to carts at FW and I wish it was back to the good old times once again. When we see a family bicycling together rather than carting to a destination while at FW it just seems so right for the camping setting. You know, slow down and enjoy the surroundings while exercising.

Exercising!!!??? Someone eject the infidel!

Sorry, just kidding... don't go trying to guilt us fat Fort folk into not enjoying our carts though! LOL

We ALWAYS bring our bikes when we camp. ;)
It's great excercise and good transporation too. :) We use the bikes at the fort actually as entertainment. For instance, during the holidays we'll hop on our bikes and ride around all the loops at the fort looking at people campsites to see how they decorated and I usually decorate my bike too. Last year at Thanksgiving time I actually had a lighted Christmas Wreath strapped to the front of my bike. :) The rest of the year we'll ride around looking for Mickey lamp posts and folks from our board and to the nightly movie and or to buy supplies at the two convient stores. So, having a light on the front of your bike and a flashing one at the back is very helpful. We will also hop on our bikes and ride them over to the Wilderness Lodge to do some shopping and dining over there or to just hang out at their pool bar. The bartenders over there really know how to make my favorite- Bahama Mama. :) We also ride our bikes up to the front check in area to hop on a bus to the parks or Downtown Disney (Just bring a lock). Or we'll ride to the back of the fort to hang out or go on the boat where we can then visit all the Monorail resorts MK or the transporatation and ticket center to Epcot.

Bikes are great! The only thing we haven't done yet on our bikes is ride them out of the Fort to Downtown or Port Orleans, Key West Resort etc. Hubby keeps bugging me to try, but theirs no sidewalks and the main roads are pretty busy. So, he hasn't talked me into that yet.

I have ridden my bike outside FW and my advice would be to not attempt it unless you are very comfortable with riding on very busy roads.

An anti-melon-crusher IS advisable.

We love riding our bikes over to the wilderness lodge to get lunch at roaring forks. Last time, we rode over after dinner and had dessert. You can get a brownie and bowl of soft serve ice cream and make two nice brownie sundaes out of it.

Our only problem was we enjoyed the view, the nice weather and desert so much that we forgot we had to ride back. The trail is very dark at night especially without a flashlight. My iphone helped light the way.

We were there 8th through the 16th. We rode bikes everywhere in the Fort and to WL. We locked them most of the time. The kids think mine is so old, who would want to steal it. I really enjoy walking and biking. Of course, carts are fun, but with all the exercise I get from walking and bikes, I can eat all the ice cream I want.

We also have never used a cart at FW. We take old bikes and have never even locked them up. There's just something really tranquil about cruising around slowly through the Fort on 2 wheels.

Good luck on training for the 2010 Marathon. I've run them the last 4 years - The last 2 of which were Goofy's with DS19. We're signed up to do our 3rd Goofy in 2010.

A flashlight and some duct tape oughtta get'er done!!;)
LOL
Now that one DH might be able to rig up. hehehehehe

Hey about helmets- our kids always wear helmets but that also means us adults need to? ugh I gotta buy a helmet and have helmet hair all day at the parks? :rotfl: Dude is it that dangerous inside FW? LOL

I am another regular bike rider at the Fort. I love an early morning ride over to WL. By the way, Disney strongly discourages riding bikes outside of FW and WL. I have on two occassions seen Disney security returning guests and their bikes to FW. The free ride comes with a stern lecture.

I dont think helmets are an actual RULE...just safe practice. Personally, I didnt even wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle on the interstate when I owned one...now its a state law again.

I know...it wasnt the smartest thing Iv ever been known to do...but New Orleans is HOT, especially since motorcycles have no A/C!!! Sometimes death is more welcome than sweat!!

Wear your lid folks....do as I say, not as I do!!

We'ved used flash lights and bungee cords...same principal.

Duct tape...a man's best friends. I got my husband a T shirt that featured a picture of a large roll of duct tape..with "I'm on a roll"..underneath! :rotfl:

Duct tape is man's #1 invention....having MILLIONS of uses..such as....

Oh...and you can add to the list: Stop the flashing on the DVD..VCR...or other gadgets by Placing a small piece of duct tape across the front of your million dollar hi tech toy:sad2:
