The Southwest is to Mexico what the NYC area is to Italy. This area has SO many Italian restaurants, really great ones, too. Its the number one thing folks miss when they move out of the area (unless they moved to Boston).

Trattoria Tra Di Noi 622 East 187th St. Bronx, NY

Amazing food!

I think Italy not New York when I think Italian food.

Well, I'm more of a "Boston Italian"--my grandmother and cousins lived in the area when I was growing up. But, even I've heard of Rao's. They're iconic. It may be that, living on the west coast, you don't fully grasp how much the Italian culture (and plenty of other cultures) is a part of the melting pots of NY and Boston. It's kind of funny, my very American, only-a-quarter-Italian DD moved to Boston for college, and when she went into the North End (i.e., Little Italy), she said, "Mom, I knew I was HOME!" And when she mentioned her Italian-immigrant grandfather, they treated her like one of the family. I've never actually eaten Italian in NYC, but I imagine it's similar.

I will have to keep an eye out for Rao's sauce on sale.

TVguy, Italian food by the Italian community in New York is also legendary.
Rao's restaurant has been there a long time!!!
Rao's is very good, and I will pay for it if it is within budget at all!!!

That being said, we might actually be lucky enough to visit Italy next year.
I would LOVE to know where to go to get really good Italian right there in the main area of Rome... and the Amalfi Coast too.
That would be amazing!!!

I like it mixed in, but I'm not picky. I'll have it any which way!

True. I have never been to Boston or New York City......well I did change planes once in 1976 at JFK but I don't think that counts.

Sort of like people think I had just hope in the car in Sacramento and be at Disneyland in an hour. No, it's a 7 hour 430 mile trip.

Folks don't realize it is a 13 hour drive (without traffic) and 830+ miles from one end of California the the other.

People tend to forget about the Italians in New Orleans. Red gravy, muffulettas, St. Joseph's altars, etc. are just a few many Italian contributions to unique culture of New Orleans.

It’s been a dream of mine to eat at the original Rao’s in NYC. I often stay at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas, which has its own Rao’s, but I know it’s not the same, so I can’t bring myself to eat there!

I, too, have always wanted to eat at the original Rao’s in NYC, but I don’t think it will ever happen. When my adult son and I were in Vegas two years ago, we had dinner at Rao’s in Caesar’s Palace. It was fantastic! And, I can’t say enough good things about our waiter. Wow! Two of the rooms in the Caesar’s Palace Rao’s are replicas of the restaurant in NY, which, I understand, is very small. We enjoyed our evening at Rao’s. I say go for it the next time you are in Las Vegas.

BREAKING NEWS:
My wife is fixing spaghetti with homemade sauce tonight. LOL.

That’s good to hear! I know I really should give it a try...

I can't give specific restaurant suggestions--Rome is huge, it depends where you're staying. I will say that, while my oldest didn't mind the hours-long, multi-course Italian dinners, my younger DD didn't care for them. So, while we were in Italy, younger DD and I ate street food. It was really, really good! We preferred it to the fancy meals, no doubt. Be aware, they sell pizza by the "etto"--100 grams, not by the slice. We did have an amazing seafood dinner in Sorrento. and my older DD went to a fancy cooking demonstration/dinner outside Florence that I would have loved to have attended, but wasn't leaving DD(then)14 on her own. But, since they heard I wanted to be there, but couldn't, they sent DD22 back with leftovers--enough to feed the three of us for lunch the next day.

The Amalfi cost is breathtaking--we preferred southern Italy to Northern. Do try a granita--orange juice poured over lemon slush.

We're actually flying back to Europe next week, to do London-Paris-Rome, I'm super excited.
