Absolutely.
I had been reading months of backlash on here against MM+ and FP+, so I was prepared for stress.
Boy was I wrong! We stayed at SOG, so we didn't even get the luxury of planning our FP+ months in advance, but we certainly didn't have any trouble getting any FP we wanted even the day before.
There is no need to be tied to the phone, I don't understand that complaint. Unless you are checking the FP time or changing your selection, why do you need to be looking at your phone? It just seems self-imposed to me. Maybe someone who felt so tied to their phone could explain it to me better so I can understand. I just never felt it.
I feel like the new FP+ reservations let us "wing it" even more, to be honest. For example, in the Magic Kingdom, we had FastPasses for BTM or something on that side of the park. We had found that we spent most of our morning on that side of the park and were heading into the afternoon without having been over to Fantasy Land or Tomorrowland, so we took the train over to the new Fantasy Land. Around that time, our FP+ window opened up for BTM, but we were on the other side of the park and we really didn't feel like going all the way back over. Besides, we wanted to explore Tomorrowland a bit. A minute or two later, while we were getting our bearings and doing a bathroom break, I had gone into the app and switched our Fastpass around from BTM to SM, letting us walk right on to an attraction that we were next to on a whim. Isn't that the very definition of "Winging it?" That would not have been even conceivable under the old system, where we would be pretty well tied to the time and attraction on our piece of paper. Now, based on where we were in the park, we were able to swap around times and attractions in just a few seconds with no problem.
I think people are romanticizing the old system a bit. The idea of the FP legacy was just as restrictive as the new one...you were meant to be at a certain attraction at a certain time. Woe betide he who didn't run across the park at opening or while everyone else was eating lunch to hopefully get a piece of paper that fit in to your touring plan. This time, I got to pick my times. I got to pick my attractions. I didn't have to run all over tarnation for the first hour of park opening to get my passes. And if I didn't like what I had, or if our group found that we just weren't up to riding at the moment our window opened up, it took just a few seconds to get our bearings, change our minds, and make a new reservation. No running required.
