My dad just let me know today that one of his step-great-grandchildren was killed in an accidental shooting at home. He was 2 and he or one of his two siblings discharged the loaded handgun that they found lying on the bed. Their mother apparently was in the other room. It is not known which child actually pulled the trigger. Not that it matters. So traumatic for the 2 that lived through it, tragic for the one who was killed. The parents were charged today with failing to secure a firearm. I just cannot understand why you would have a loaded gun in a house with young children, and if you did have one, why it would not be secured in some way. I didn't know this child, but the whole thing breaks my heart and I feel so sad for my dad, as he is close to this family. It makes me worry even more about all the dangers my children could encounter in this life.
