The firemen do appreciate the property they protect and I know that even though it didn't feel like that at the time...they do....they really do.

Sorry I didn't mean to offend you, I was mostly referring to the shock the OP must of felt and was trying to be supportive.

I was not trying to demean the danger service men and women deal with everyday on their jobs.

Diane , how sad . I can imagine how you feel, we also built our home ourselves to raise our family and we'd surely be upset and sad to see all our hard work, blood, sweat and tears go up in smoke for whatever reason ! My DH was a volunteer fire fighter for many moons and as others have mentioned, looking from their point of view, their training will help save someone's life. Thankfully, those memories will always be tucked in your families hearts . The house I was born in is in shambles, however, it doesn't seem to hurt as much when you didn't build it!

Very good analogy. My best friend had a liver transplant just under 3 months ago, and it's a verrrrry weird time. She's working on her letter to the donor's family (she'll send it through the program of course) and it's very hard.

I definitely think it's a good analogy.

Actually this WAS moved FROM the DVC community forum!!! I thought it was appropriate there, because that's where my friends are.

As for the house...We have since learned that it was probably destroyed by the city for financial reasons. A new ordinance put into effect several months after we sold it to the city required that no house could be sold without first hooking it up to city sewer and water. Since this house was on a well/septic system and was isolated in a heavy wooded area on top of a hill, it would have made that hook up VERY expensive. I was told by the last occupant that the septic system failed, and the city refused to repair it and decided to burn the house instead. The plan is to put together the residual property around the house and sell it as a commercial property. That means all those wonderful large oak trees in the mesianic oak forrest are going to be gone soon too. UGH!!! I HATE that idea!

I know most of you here on the community board now don't remember me much, but I used to be a regular here as well as on the DVC board. The advent of the DVC community board pulled me away from here, and while probably 15,000 of my 33,000+ posts were right here on the CB, I rarely frequent it anymore. I guess I'd prefer it be on the DVC/CB.

Whenever I go back to NY, I drive by my childhood home. It's a little sad to see it get more and more run down over the passing years.

Still, it's just a thing and my family sold it years ago, so it isn't a big deal.

We have some beautiful big old oak trees on our current acreage as well. The difference is that this time our house is in the middle of a prairie restoration, and the oaks are in clusters. This is considered an oak savanna rather than a mesic oak forrest. Instead of oaks right up around my log house, I have a native prairie restoration, and THIS is what I look out on now!

Beautiful for sure, just different from the old house.

And my son, Vince, is a FF/paramed, and they do burns, but always in homes ready to be scrapped, or before the real estate meltdown, if somebody was doing a teardown to build one of those monstrosity Mcmansions. (One good result of the meltdown, no more of those for the foreseeable).

And yes, if your time is more spent on the dvc/cb, I would think it better there too. But, as said above.......

Dan, good to see you! This house was apparently burned because it would be a financial burden to the city to install the required city sewer and water to ready it for resale. The city purchased it from us, and they didn't want to pay for the swere installation, so the result was to burn it and get it off their hands...That's the sad part.
