As many of you may know, we had a tragedy at our school right before Christmas. The teacher next door to me (and on my grade level) went to pick up her baby from the babysitter and found the child unresponsive. To make a long story short, the babysitter has been charged with aggravated assault and battery. She confessed to violently shaking the baby.
This teacher is new to our school and county. She was out the first eight weeks of school on maternity leave and had only been actually teaching these students for about 2 and a half months. She and her husband are young and this is their first baby. As you can imagine, the ongoing medical bills are sky high and are climbing every day. Hannah faces at least one if not three more surgeries and that is just what we know of at this point. As grade level chair and Beta Club sponsor, I knew my students wanted to do something for Lori and Jay. Of course, the kids all wanted to do a bake sale. We are a very small school of less than 500 with a staff of about 50 or so. We asked everyone that wanted to contribute to bring baked goods to school on Wednesday. On Wednesday afternoon when all the 5th grade was in the lunchroom, Lori, Jay, and Hannah came in. At first there was silence then you could just hear a ripple of.."Mrs. Trosper...Mrs. Trosper" and the next thing I knew, all the students (4th and 5th) were on their feet clapping!! Talk about bringing on the tears. This morning we were STILL receiving food items. In fact, we had enough baked goods to run the sale for three days. My Beta students were in charge of running the sale and of course I was over the whole process. Well, I just have to say that I am overwhelmed with the response we received. Our small little school raised right at $2,000 on our three day bake sale!!
The money will be deposited into an account that our PTO established for Hannah's medical funds. The local newspaper will be running a follow up story to Hannah and will be including stories about our bake sale. The article will also mention the Medical Fund that has been established and we are hoping for even more interest from the community. I am so blessed to be part of such a terrific group of students, parents, and staff.
