and I am wondering what to do? I have heard that steam extraction is the only way to go, I have heard chem dry is the only way to go......someone break the tie!

FYI my carpets do not appear dirty at all, I am most interested in extending their life, and a little "fluff" of high traffic areas that are slightly matted.

My sister owns a carpet cleaning business. Steam is the way to go. Just think about it -- wouldn't you want to know that your carpets were steam cleaned, getting out deep set dirt and also killing germs.

Our carpets are 3 years old and we haven't done anything special to them. We vacuum regularly and remove spots right away and they still look new. I supposed I would choose steam-cleaning if I felt like they needed a good cleaning but, for now, they're fine.

If they don't need it, don't do anything. I would use a steam cleaner. The Chem Dry stuff doesn't do a good job getting deep into the carpet. I have had both done and steam is the way to go. It is kind of like using a brush to clean all your clothes or using your washing machine to clean your clothes.

Whatever you choose don't do it to often! We used to get our living room steam cleaned and when we pulled up the rugs years down the road the bottom of the rug had mold on it from the moisture of the steam cleaning! After that we had no more rugs ever in our home!

Maybe I should just use my Bissel machine on the stairs, which is the area I most want to "fluff"
