Here's the story. Today was a ski race for DS9's ski school group. He raced against 9 other kids. So, the kids race and DS comes in w/2 great times (34 and 30). One kid, who has the same first name as DS9, comes in w/a good time and a lousy time (35 and 47) b/c he fell on the course. Anyway, they take the two race times, average them and come up w/the time/score. There are 5 winners in DS's category.
Well, turns out that DS is supposed to place 4th, according to his times. When they call awards, they call up the other kid (the kid w/a good time and a bad time) for 4th place and another kid for 5th place. So, we're like "what the ...?!!?" but don't say or do anything until after awards. B/c who is going to make a stink during awards?
Anyway, after awards, we go up to the race officials and ask what the deal is. They look at the times and say "ooops, we gave it to the wrong one" (meaning my DS should have gotten it and not the kid w/the same first name as DS). No kidding!!! They wrote down the wrong name on their winner list. OK, mistakes happen and I can understand that. So, we say "Well, does our kid get a medal for his position?". After all, he officially came in 4th, the other kid (w/the same first name) came in 5th and the kid who was in 5th would've been 6th. Well, they say NO! We asked "Why not? He placed!" and they say "We gave all the medals out". So, I say "Well, can't you do something else?" And, they say NO! Funny -- they had trophies left over from the last month's race -- they couldn't have mustered one of those up!?
It's not like I wanted them to go up to the other kids and switch the medals or take them away ... b/c that would just be mean and nasty and I would never do that to anyone. But, they couldn't do anything else for my kid? A certificate? Something!?!?!? You can't tell me that they don't have some other kind of award to give out! What about those left over trophies!? Seriously ... they didn't need to announce their mistake -- they could've just did it on the QT. It wasn't like I was looking for everyone in the room to know ... I just wanted what was fair for my child. The race officials didn't have to announce anything (b/c it would've embarrassed the other kids) -- they could have done it w/o anyone knowing. They knew they made a mistake and did nothing about it!!!!!!
Unfortunately, even though we, and the race officials, explained to DS that he placed 4th, he doesn't believe that he did. He thinks we're trying to be nice to him.
I feel bad for my child. He has worked hard all season and got the shaft!
Thanks for letting me vent. I kept my cool while I was there, but was heartbroken for my kid.
