We are shorter trip people. We live about 550 miles away (NC) and have mastered the drive down (flew just once for marathon). We would much rather be able to hit the World once or twice a year than have to wait two years to go back. Of course, our approach can butt up against tickets. We first got a 10-day pass with no expiration, which seemed like the best deal for us. Took us at least three trips to use that up, as our kids were a lot younger and we would plan a trip for roughly three park days with a resort/pool/DTD day somewhere in the middle. We then re-upped and got a second 10-day, no-expiration pass after we finished off the first one. Finished it off last year and just took the plunge and got APs, which is going to mean a handful of short trips over the coming year.
If getting to WDW was a lot harder for us, I would, however, be tempted to do longer trips, but wow, over a week anywhere takes a lot of, uh, courage, not to mention cash!
