And this is my responses.

What I asked:
I was wondering if anyone could point me the write direction for a thread to read so I can figure this whole system out.

What to book for trading?

How it works?

How to figure out what resorts are worth trading into?

Am I making a good trade?

Etc Etc....

Thanks much

Responses:

**************** seems to be the most popular DVC forum currently. Get involved with the threads on this site and study that forum as well..

If you are a DVC owner- often your best option is to book and use at a DVC property.. If you aren't a DVC owner- you probably posted this thread in the wrong area and instead are looking for more exchange type advice....

Another response:

"DVC is different than Marriott and other more or less traditional timeshares in that you don't ever 'trade' a week - you give your points back to Disney and they manage the trade through Interval International.

The upside is that you never have to worry about booking prime weeks or resorts to get the trade you want. The downside is that you don't have a 'real' Interval International account and are somewhat at the mercy of what Disney can find for you."

I thought we could trade out NOT going through disney? How will that work then? Does it cost just a crazy amount of points then to go other places then our DVC properties

Interval International has different types of participating memberships. With most timeshare companies, like Marriott, the owner is direct member of Interval International, meaning they access the II website and book their own trades.

DVC has a corporate II membership, meaning that we have to call DVC to book II trades for us. DVC has a list of approvel II destinations. DVC handles the actual transaction with II on your behalf.

You could do direct exchanges (owner to owner) -- but they can be tricky to negotiate and require a great deal of trust on both sides. Generally, the idea of "trading" DVC refers to the World Passport Collection (a subset of II resorts) and yes, this involves working through DVC Member Services. Run a few searches here on "II" and you'll find quite a few threads.

You can not book/exchange in Interval Internantional directly. All II exchanges are done by DVC on your behalf. Most trades in II are worth the points required for the exchange. Most times you are better off renting the required points and paying cash to book a room. Exceptions to this would be Carribbean resorts, Hawaii and other top resorts. You can get a "value" of a resort by looking at redweek.com for asking rental prices.

You can do a direct trade with another owner, I do this often for my Starwood properties (Harborside, St John and Hawaii). You can post an exchange request on sites like Redweek, TUG, myresorts, SFX, VRBO and several others, without going thru II or DVC.

IMO, you will get better info on DVC from this Forum and mostly from the same people. You may get someone who's active there are not here, and Vice Versa. OTOH, TUG is invaluable for other aspects of buying or trading. I'd suggest you use TUG to educate yourself on non DVC issues including purchasing and for things related to resort and area selection. For example, I have 2 weeks confirmed at the Grand Mayan San Jose del Cabo. I wanted to get a second week that overlapped to experiene somewhat Cabo San Lucas. Given we likely won't have a car for part or all of the time, I want a resort that is fairly easy to get to town either by walking or shuttle. I eliminated quite a lot of otherwise great resorts that were on my original list based on the info provided given I had a specific need. You can often get nuances about areas, resorts, exchanging that you could not get any other way. Say you want to go to HI and like the beach. You are looking at the Big Island and target Kona Coast Resort but then you realize there's no beach or a given resort assigns exchangers to much worse locations that would not be acceptable to you, Lawaii Beach Resort comes to mind.

Thanks for the help everyone. Are there an stickys or thread I need to read or should I just do a search?

If you're looking at trading using DVC for II, you're best bet is likely to search DIS. You may also want to use google back into DIS. Given I've participated in most of the threads that are likely to be helpful, adding my ID may help you find what you need and/or narrow your search.

How about using the rent / trade board? Or is that only for DVC to DVC trades? I'm just wondering if you could offer a week at DVC and ask for exchanges into someone's other time shares. Don't DVC people own at more than 1? Maybe someone would like more DVC one year or something like that. I would trust a DVC member before anyone else.

Yes, you can use the rent/trade board here on Dis, but you are better off using one of the sites I had listed in an earlier post.
