SO I must have "SUCKER" stamped on my head..

I went to register my son for kindergarten today. I was waiting for him to finish his 'test' for the teacher (talking, coloring, etc) and chatting with a couple of the ladies. As I was leaving, one of them ran out and yelled "wait! I meant to ask you something.." Apparently she's the only active board member for the school PTA. She wants me as her VP next year (if only because I'm willing to try to help out).

I feel your pain, I too have "sucker" on my head. I have had numerous moms beg and outright volunteer my time and help to school activities. When I have the time it is all right but I work for a living and eventually I learned the word "NO". It is so refreshing, try it sometimes!

I feel your pain. I was asked to be Treasurer for our PTO next year...on the very same day I sorted out and distributed 800+ tubs of cookie dough which turned out to be a disaster. I said that wasnt the day to ask me to do ANYTHING!
Im learning once you volunteer a little, they get your name, and youre the one they call for everything!

I don't understand..........if these women are vounteering their time to help with your child's school, why do you feel as if you are exempt or a sucker when you are asked to help? Just because you have a full time job? I would think you would want to do what you can to give your child the best school experience possible...........and certainly not ridicule these women for trying to do what is best for your child's school. I don't understand your attitude!

I understand the attitude, it from people feeling like they have too much to do already and volunteering takes a lot of time and engergy.
But I felt it was worth it. I did it for 6 years as treasurer and vp.

I am a single mom, work full time and was very involved in the pto when my dd was in k thru 4th grade. I was chairman of many fundraisers etc. At one point, a lady came up to me and said "you must be the ultimate volunteer". She saw me at everything.

I felt real good about my dd's schooling and that I was involved. I was real tired because it was always the same people involved but I found it real rewarding.

Ohhh, ohhh - you are what they refer to our Elementary School as "fresh meat"!! Parents of first-timers who have pep and energy and zeal!!

My DD is graduating from HS this year and my DS is in 9th grade - I swear I lived at that elementary school for about 8 years straight!!

You will have fun - coupled with frustration over all of the other parents who:
1) never show up or volunteer for anything
2) show up for the event five minutes beforehand, meticulously groomed and then are out the door as soon as it's over.....

I hope you read the "fine print" on that commitment you just made, atlnewf. In DS6's school (next year), you are VP one year, and slide into the Pres. position the next!

I am looking forward to being a lunch mom, volunteer, whatever, next year at that school and for DS4 in his preschool. I may be naive, but I feel bad when a mom has to miss doing things at school because of work. I feel lucky to be able to help. I am sure I will change my tune after a few years of seeing the same people helping, and the same people NOT helping, but for now I don't mind doing it.

I have the oposite problem at my younger DS's school. I have volunteered to help repeatedly and no one ever calls! I did help at their chili feed...once... They always want help for their activities but they expect that you'll read their minds and know what to do and when to do it. Sorry - just too busy for that. I'd love to help if they will just tell when and where I'd be there.

I'm involved in a couple of other civic groups which are the same way. Everyone whines about needing help but they aren't organized enough to take advantage of the help they have available to them.

Actually I'm rather excited to be able to help out. I guess I'll have to wait and see how frustrating it may be. My mom was warning me that once they get your name, you're always called.
