So I *might* want to become a teacher?

My daughter will graduate in May with her teaching certification in Social Science. We've been looking for job openings across the country. It is very discouraging. The only teaching jobs that seem to be prevalent are those associated with special education.

Hi!

When I first got accepted into a concurrent education program (where you get a separate major + your bachelors of education at the same time) last March, I was a little worried about accepting the offer. Although being a teacher was something that I had dreamed of my whole life, the fact was it is expensive. Especially, since getting a full time job as a teacher might be a little bit harder.

Currently, I find myself $7,000 in debt practically, only after my first year, but I think that soon plenty of teachers will be retiring. We were discussing in my Child and Youth Studies seminar the other day about how schools would rather hire back retired teachers, rather than spend the money on training a new teacher. However people can only work for so long.

I personally think that it is a good investment, being a teacher that is, just because in 5 years time or less, teachers will be needed most likely, because others will be retiring, in large amounts.

The main reason why I wanted to be a teacher was because I love kids, and it seems like an amazingly fun job to have. In the end, the amount of money I will be spending on my education will be worth it because than I can have the opportunity to do something that I have wanted to do since I was in kindergarten.

My program: BA - Child and Youth Studies (honors) / BEd Primary-Junior.

You might want to Google "Teaching Fellows" which is a program for switching to a teaching carreer...Lots of support!
