sprayed some pam on one side of a piece of bread; put that side down in a frying pan; put two slices of cheese on top; put another slice of bread on top which was also sprayed with pam on one side; fried each side until toasted but the cheese never melted!!

I admit I cannot cook but I believe I did everything right! I ended up putting the sandwich in the microwave for 20 seconds and it turned out good but is this what I'm going to have to do each time I made a grilled cheese sandwich?!!

Thanks!

It take practice and patience.

Use butter or margarine on the bread instead. Not a lot, just a light layer. Slap a slice of bread down, put the cheese on, then the other piece of bread. Move it around just a little if you have a pan like mine, then when you stop hearing it sizzle, flip it over. Same thing, when it stops sizzling, it's done. Make sure the heat is not on high.

what kind of cheese did you use? how thick were the slices? how thick were the slices of bread?how hot was the skillet and Use butter or mayo on the outside of the bread NOT pam-pam is essentially spray veg or olive oil and will brown faster than the cheese will melt. if the slices of cheese are too think they will not melt evenly-and if the slices of bread are too thick the cheese will not get warm enough to melt before the bread is toasted.
for a great grilled cheese-butter one slice of orowheat 12 grain bread and place in a skillet-top with three slices of tillamook co-jack cheese-i get the 16 slice package -the slices are perfect-top with a second slice of bread -buttered on the outside-turn the skillet on to medium and cook til the bread is a nice toasty brown-3 to 5 minutes if you started with a cold skillet-flip the sandwich and brown the other side-about 2 minutes. toasty bread-melty cheese-yummo.

Can't use lowfat or fatfree cheese, it doesn't melt. Also, Pam will not give you enough protection from burning the bread because it takes a while to get the heat up to the cheese. I do mine with butter, on low heat for a long time and flip them once on each side. It's "grilled' cheese so you actually need to 'grill' it.

My mom used to cover the sandwich with a pot lid on the griddle. Keeps the heat in and helps the cheese melt!

I love grilled cheese:love:. Gotta use real butter and you have to cover it to get the cheese to melt.

IT's also good to use the squeeze margarine on the outside, 1 slice of deli american or sharp american or 2 slices of Kraft singles on a panini press. I have a cuisinart griddler, my 12 year old made herself one of these for dinner tonight.

I've never made my "grilled" cheese in a pan! We make them in the oven using the broiler. Turn the broiler to low - move the rack all of the way up and line the rack with aluminum foil. Butter your bread and put on cheese - leave the top bread off to start. Put under the broiler until the cheese melts, then add the top bread. Once the top bread gets toasted (watch it closely - it cooks quite fast), flip the whole sandwich and toast the bottom bread. Get nicely toasted bread and melty cheese! And quick too - only takes a couple minutes!

We use Pam as well, but honestly, to do them right in a pan, you really need butter, IMO... or you will be doing just what you said - putting them in the microwave for a short time.

Now, the real question is, did you have a nice bowl of tomato soup with the grilled cheese? In my house, we never have one without the other. ;)

In the pan with real butter is to die for, unfortunately, literally if you eat enough of them, lol. My DD12 likes to put the pre cooked bacon on hers too, she can make a meal out of just one of those. I've also added a couple of slices of Boars Head ham or turkey as well.

30 second grilled cheese

favorite bread
favorite cheese

build sandwich
microwave 10 seconds for normal cheese/bread thickness. adjust as needed
while microwaving ~ heat frying pan low or medium ~ dab pan with end of stick of butter
flop sandwich in ~ slide around pan to soak butter
rub top of sandwich with soft butter stick
brown bottom then flip and brown

eat
make two more

Mikeeee

its a cheese sandwich! it doesn't deserve twenty dang minutes of labor!

Man, you really can't cook. :goodvibes You need to cover it and cook it medium low.

Never, ever use Kraft singles -- they aren't cheese! They're mostly oil. Check the package. They cannot legally use the word cheese.

The real American cheese doesn't come with individual wrappers (because, being actual cheese with real dairy products inside) it won't melt into one big blob if it isn't separated with plastic. Real cheese will melt better, taste better, and it's MUCH better for you.

I've always used the oven (broiler) or when I'm at my DD's, I use their toaster oven.. No Pam though - doesn't sound very appetizing to me.. I use butter or margarine..:goodvibes

all I have to say is...I wish this thread would drop down a couple pages, because everytime I see this thread, I contemplate making me a grilled cheese sandwich!!
And, I do not NEED a grilled cheese sandwich!!!

I'm so with the people who blamed the cheese...

Cheese food or processed cheese is NOT cheese. It will take forever to melt and when it does.. YUK!:scared:

Oh, I looove grilled cheese, the way it is yummiest is with butta, butta, butta!
Sorry, I like it best with Kraft singles!! :rolleyes1
Patience when cooking, slowly til it's browned and ooey gooey!

(Ok, I know it's not a healthy way to eat a grilled cheese, but yummiest and a special treat!):flower3:
