Johnny Depp's boozy, woozy buccaneer Jack Sparrow has plundered the box office, with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" taking in a record $132 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Critics have been predicting for months now that Dead Man's Chest was going to be the movie to break Spiderman 2's four year opening weekend and day record and after Friday's opening day figures, there was no doubt the movie would hit $120 million.
I still find it ironic that the first Pirates movie was slammed three years ago upon its release. No one wanted to watch a pirate adventure movie trying to revive a long dead and buried genre. And yet, pirates has gone on to make more money than anyone could ever have dreamed of and just surpassed big draws such as Spiderman and Star Wars to become the biggest opening ever.
Even more ironic: summer of 2007 faces us with both POTC 3 and Spiderman 3. It ought to be an entertaining summer and will be the end of two truly fantastic trilogies.
