So.... How much are your pictures worth?

True story sadly..

DS has a laptop with a 40 gb hard drive. She was out of town last weekend and her hard drive failed. She had all of her pictures from our trip to China on there and recipes, etc. She of course had no backup. (I had told her about carbonite, etc.)

She was devastated. The repair facility that replaced drive said they could not get drive to spin, a good thing. She sent drive to disk recovery place in CA and they confirmed mechanical failure. They said they could get all her stuff for her for the low price of $2400.

They will be sending her all info she wants on DVD's.

Carbonite costs $5 per month. Others are in that price range. Remember this is only 40gb of data. Imagine what a TB would be!

What a nightmare---altough I guess the upside is that at least her stuff was recoverable! Makes me think that maybe I should get on the ball with my project to export all of my pictures to my external HD and burn them onto discs. I have been a serious slacker and probably haven't backed up any in the last 10 months. That being said, other than our December trip to Disney, I really haven't taken any that I care about losing in the last 10 months, so maybe I can put it off for juuuuuuust a bit longer.

Oh I'm so sorry her hard disk failed, but glad her data is recoverable. Some years ago I had a hard disk failure and lost 2 years worth of photos.

After that I purchased 2 external hard drives and back up all my documents and photos religiously. And I cycle the drives. Normally one is here connected to the computer and the other is at the bank in a safe deposit box. Call me paranoid, but when I was a kid my grandparents house burned and they lost everything. Two years worth was bad enough!
