So frustrating

DD (13) and I are supposed to be flying to London on Thursday morning for a 4 day mother-daughter trip (our first one, btw). We have been looking so much forward to it and I´ve been working 16 hours a day for the past weeks to make this possible (both time and money wise).

However, now it looks like the airports here in Iceland may be closed at that time due to volcanic ash. There were some flights that managed to land here today but most who were scheduled to depart were cancelled. The flights to London and Copenhagen for tomorrow have been cancelled too.

I´ve already paid for the hotel in full and won´t be able to get a refund if we don´t go and since the flight tickets were quite cheap when I bought them we will have to pay a considerable amount of money if we need to reschedule them.

The uncertainty is just so frustrating. Vent over!

There have been thousands of people stranded here due to that volcano. Just a couple of days ago, they started letting flights to Europe and the UK resume.

Talk to your airline. Most of them have been working with the folks to rebook their flights at no extra cost since it is something beyond anyone's control.

Believe me, we are very aware of the millions of people who were stranded ;)

I spoke with the airline today and they said that I could either get a refund or re-book and then I would have to pay the price difference.

I'm so sorry your trip may be spoiled.

That volcano sure has disrupted many people's plans. My granddaughter got home last Friday from Germany, they had to spend an extra week there because of the volcano. We missed her, of course, but our only concern was that the airlines made sure it was safe to fly before they got back into the sky. It's so good to have her home, safe and sound, though. She loved it, and wants to go again next year.

Freyja, that is disappointing. I hope it all works out

My DD's teacher and her DH chaperoned a group of the older kids from their school on a trip to Rome and Turkey. She just got home from Turkey this past Sunday, only 8 days behind schedule, her DH is still there, no word yet on when he will return (along with several more of the chaperones)

I think it is awful that the airlines and the hotels are all taking advantage of people by not being flexible or relaxing their cancellation policies. I understand that business is business but this is so global one would think they could flex a bit.

Hope it all sorts itself out and that you not only get to go but that you also get home again as scheduled.

I can certainly understand your frustration, Freyja. I hope you get some satisfaction in this matter.

Thanks to all of you. I should know by tomorrow night whether we´ll be going or not. Keeping my fingers crossed ;)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

My parents are STILL over here with us, since their flights back to England got cancelled last week. They're flying home on saturday, by which time they will have been here for over three weeks. My parents are great people and I adore having them here, but I think DH deserves a medal for putting up with the inlaws for that long!!!!!!

They've been able to claim all extra expenses back from their insurance company, so perhaps they would cover additional costs if you do have to rebook?

Really ... I am really surprised that this hotel will not either give you a refund OR give you a voucher to use when you do re-schedule. Explain to them that this is out of your control. That you do not want to cancel; that you have no choice.

Good luck.
