SO excited - I had to share my bargain news!

Is it a Pleasant Company Samantha? or a Mattel Samantha? If its Pleasant Company the dolls are bigger and might cause an issue with buying new clothes -someone may have to correct me (i'd be happy if they do) it's been awhile and all my dolls are pleasant company but my uncles god daughter's is mattel and its a few inches smaller than my own; does anyone know if that matters? I doubt it but just something to look for) Also if it is Pleasant Company it's worth a WHOLE LOT more than the Mattel one which is also worth a nice sum too since she is retired. :thumbsup2

Hmm, I think she might be Pleasant Company because that is what is stamped on her neck - how would you tell the difference? Her body is tan, not white, if that helps at all. I'd be interested to hear if the new clothes won't fit because I don't want to drop a bundle on stuff that she can't wear. I'm sure DD will want to use some of her birthday money to go to the AG store and get a few things, so we don't want her to be disappointed if they won't fit. Also good to know that the Target shoes won't fit her, either. I rummaged through my DD's doll clothes and found a brand-new pair of black tights and some black shoes that she had never used on her other dolls and they fit fine; I think the package on the tights said "Springfield Collection". That's the stuff Michael's carries, right? I'll head over to that AG board someone else mentioned and see if I can find out anything about the clothes.

DD age 7 has been begging for an American Girl doll for awhile now. She told me that is all she wants for Christmas. I talked to DH about it and he said no way were we going to spend that much on one doll. Our total Christmas budget per kid is under $100, so to spend that just on one thing was too much. I was disappointed for her sake, but thought I'd try to come up with something else instead. Well, today I went into our thrift store to check for uniform pants for the kids, and swung through the toy section just to take a look...there on the shelf was a Samantha doll, in beautiful condition, just missing her shoes and socks for $7.99!!! I thought it must have been marked wrong, but nope, it rang up for the $7.99! It won't be much of a problem to find some shoes and socks for Samantha (and a wig brush, right?), and I cannot wait to see DD's face on Christmas morning. She is going to be ecstatic, and I am pretty stoked, too!

FYI when we had DD doll styles at American Girl the stylist said to never brush the hair while dry always mist it with water first.

Great find!! My little one wants one, but I won't spend the money. I hope to find one some day for a deal like that!

Our thirft stores are expensive. They had a Kit (not even a Pleasant Co) and wanted $75.00, not in unplayed with condition either. A Vera Bradley bag was $35.00 used!!! They keep these things behind the counter so you have to ask to see them.
Congrats on your find...Samantha was my DD's first doll (that's her name) and now we have 9 sitting around and tons of clothes. I miss those days!

I honestly don't know if the clothes would fit that's why i mentioned it, i just know there is a definite size difference in the dolls. I hope they fit because i also was planning on saving mine for my child and getting new clothes as they came out.
& Yes the fact that is says pleasant company on the neck makes it more valuable - honestly the build of the original pleasant company dolls is just so much better - or at least thats what i've noticed. Congrats on the even now more excellent find!
& i'll try and ask around about the outfit sizes.

Thanks - I can sew, so I will be able to make some stuff for her, but I know DD is going to want to go to the AG store and pick some things out herself and I wouldn't want her to be disappointed if they don't fit. So if we knew ahead of time, I could warn her to stick to accessories instead of clothes. Actually, maybe I should just bring the doll in to the store while DD is at school one of these days and ask the store directly (duh!).

I'd take the doll to the store and see what fits. Some items may fit better than others.

I made most of D's doll clothes...fast and easy. And the occassional matching outfit. One quick outfit was to buy a tshirt at Target or somewhere, then cut it off a few inches below the arm. I used the bottom of the tshirt to form a "tshirt" top for the doll, sewed some slightly gathered fabric to the bottom of both. Instant dress. (I know I'm explaining badly, it really is easy to do).

First off, Congrats on such an awesome find! Woo Hoo!!!

Now to answer your question...
DD has a pleasant Co Samantha that we purchased from a friend for $25 (yup! that is
all she wanted for the doll and 3 outfits!) All of her other AG dolls are Mattel. Samantha can wear the current mattel manufactured fashions but she cannot fit into the cheaper clothing made bu Target, TRU, etc... She is too thick bodied. But we've never had a problem with her fitting into current AG clothing styles. HTH. :goodvibes

awesome! thank you. honestly, i only brought it up because i would hate for anyone to spend a fortune on outfits to just find out they don't fit. Now I kind of want to buy some outfits for my own dolls :lmao:

That's so exciting!!! I always wanted an American Girl doll when I was a little girl...

THANK YOU! :worship: I will let my sister know because I have a feeling she was going to pick up some outfits from Target. So we will stick to what I can make or what DD can afford with her birthday money from the AG store. I found some patterns online that someone scanned from an AG book about sewing for Samantha, so I will probably start with those since they are specifically designed for her.

Isn't it amazing where we can find budget buys if we only keep our eyes open:thumbsup2I've been going to an auction for the past two Sundays of a local woman, single, no family, who died recently and discovered to the family's horror:scared1: and others' glee :rotfl:she was a hoarder!!!! one of the more refined hoarders in that she never opened what she ordered or purchased...just socked the item away box and all. So far I've picked up (and remember none of this has been used): 2 fur jackets ($6 & $7.50), 1 set of bone china ($16), one set of stainless steel silverware ($11) (both 12 place settings) 2 all-weather leather with solid brass trimming Dooney & Bourke handbags for $40 and $65 (retailing on their website for $298) and the best part is the final auction of just jewelry is still coming up:worship:DD and I are having so much fun together. Who'd a thunk:rolleyes1

Thanks for all the hair and accessory advice! I had no idea we needed to brush it wet, so I'll be sure to pick up a spray bottle to go with the doll.

Just be careful not to get the eyes wet - it can cause them to rust. Keep the wettness to the hair only.
