So did anyone say anything about the "Yes on 8" banner here on the DIS?

I mean, talk about a stab in the back!

Not to mention, perhaps, a bit of self-hatred? :confused3 Who made *that* decision??

I have no idea.

I would imagine that the site owner makes decisions regarding what entities will be allowed to advertize on this site. I would further imagine that as in any other aspect of life, money talks. :confused3

Rather like the children of color choosing the white doll to play with over a doll with darker skin. Internalized discrimination does nasty things to self concept.

People discussed Vote yes on 8 banners which appeared on some other sites I visit. It's a google ad thing, google detects the discussion topic and then randomly posts related banners on the site. My understanding is site owners don't have that much control over the banners google slaps on the site. And not all of us see the same banners at the same time.

I keep getting car rental ads when I'm here at DIS, but I get some real interesting ones at MySpace. :lmao:

I have no idea how much control the DIS has over any particular ad, I'm only a mod, not involved with site administration.

But, the ads are regional Google ads. Right now, I see an ad for AeroMexico Vacations and a Hyatt resort in San Antonio. San Antonio is my nearest metroplex. Google ads somehow detect the area of the country where your computer is located, and puts up a regional ad based upon that. I never saw the Prop 8 banners at all, just heard about them via threads on this board.

Did they show on other DIS Boards, too, or only here on the G/L Board. If only the G/L Board, it means they also read and target the subject matter of boards. Which, by extrapolation, would mean that Google placed the Prop 8 ads mostly on boards that cater to the GLBT community, so overall they likely had the opposite desired effect, and probably actually rallied people that saw them to vote AGAINST the proposition. ;)

It also means that the Yes on 8 people were actually giving advertising funds to GLBT websites. I'm sure that would make their day. :lmao:

If you don't want to see any banner ads, switch your skin to DCL. The only as I ever see is for DU.

As far as the YEs on 8 ad, disgusting.

AHA! I'm not losing my mind. I thought there had been a thread on this topic.

It's good to know that it may be a google thing, and not a direct "Yes, I'll take your money" decision from the site owner.

Thanks for that info!

However, he is taking their money, so in effect he is saying Yes on 8 was fine.

I doubt "Yes on 8" received any sort of detail as to which sites got their banner package. They simply bought an internet ad agreement with Google. However, if you'd like to express you concerns to the site owner, why not contact him directly? He may not even be aware they were shown. As I said, I never saw one, I get regional San Antonio area ads for travel and Billy Bobs Beds.

The Yes on 8 Campaign was just trying to make us angry. They are the ones that control where they show up, and they asked to be put up on things with the tagline "gay". They put themselves on a lot of progressive blogs, and a lot of places where their message was wasted. They did "Yes on 8" skywriting across the West Hollywood skies on election day. They weren't trying to reach an audience, they were just taunting us, being mean spirited, and running the filthy campaign that they ran so well.

They had ads on my blog, I was so mad I got rid of google advertising, but I don't think you can blame Google, blame the Yes on 8 people for putting themselves there on purpose. As a blog owner I can change the filters to disallow those blogs, but it's actually a little technical. It was easier to get rid of google ads altogether.

Blame Protect Marriage and the Mormon Church. Lets hold them accountable for the despicable campaign they ran.

I agree. I know what political nonsense appears at my business locations. It is my job to know. (And get rid of it if it does appear)

Corey went over this on the podcast. The way it works is that Google buys the add space. What goes on behind the scenes is that either your cookies on your PC or topics discussed on the boards trigger set banners to display set things.

So if you talk about Prop 8 or visit websites about it, and a cookie is downloaded to your PC, when you visit sites that carry the banners, it sees what is discussed/where you have been, so it displays those things. And I am guessing it is not smart enough to tell if you support or oppose it, it only sees the topic, Prop 8 in this case.

That is why some people never see the banner you talk about. Corey did say they can limit what does appear on the website, but they have no way of knowing what Google is putting up there most of the time. But if you send an email, they will look into it and can then tell Google not to display that on the website.

Hopefully that makes sense to everyone.

Agree with what you are saying . .. but cast a wider net for fault. AME, Catholic etc sure had a hand in this. Ultimately though, it comes down to the individual voter.
