So Cal Resident ID'ed?

They MAY be, but they may also tell anyone who asks to take a flying leap off Paradise Pier or into the Rivers of America.

What?

I go to Disneyland like every week. And I get asked for an ID almost every time I make a purchase. Legally, every merchant is supposed to check your ID with every purchase. Most don't but Disneyland is pretty strict about it. If you don't show it, they will simply deny your purchase.

They hold your card out of sight and ask you a question about it, or they ask to see something else with your name on it. I've never been or seen anyone turned away for not having ID when making a purchase. I'm sure it happens, but they don't immediately deny the purchase.

I don't know if something is different this year, but during last year's socal discounted ticket period I called and asked if my sister (who is a SoCal resident within the valid zip codes) could gift me the tickets, and would she need to be with us to present ID? I was told no, the billing zip code is checked at time of purchase but that we as out of staters could use them as long as they were purchased with a CC that used one of the valid billing zips. My sister bought and emailed the tickets to us, and we had to present ID to match to the ticket name I think, but it definitely wasn't SoCal ID and we were never asked about it.

Again this may have changed for this year (?) but I was specifically told by Guest Services I did not need SoCal ID to use a SoCal ticket.

It has, and many folks have reported it online at multiple Discussion Boards.

Sometimes, due tolong lines, they do bypass or only ID some of the folks, similar to the Metal Detectors, if there is no real line, everyone gets sent through them, if the lines are long, some folksare picked to not be screened by security, based on a protocol of "low risk".

Things change at Disney all the time.

driving doesn't require an id for everyone, though, only the driver, just saying :P

besides that it's certainly possible to forget one's wallet at home and simply not realize you're driving without your driver's license... i've done it. :x
Yeah, I've done that, only around town, though. A few years (ok, a decade) back, we set off to the airport two hours away;; about a half hour into the drive, we realized my mom forgot her license. We turned around and still made the plane (thank goodness my dad always makes us leave early). More recently, we headed to Sea World and I realized three hours into the drive that I left all (I am the keeper of APs) our APs at home (luckily, Sea World replaced them without a charge). So, it can (and does) happen. It is odd that multiple adults would forget their IDs.

Weird. If we were going again before May I probably would have had her buy us tickets without thinking twice. Ha, good thing we didn't I guess!

Credit card transactions at DLR require valid I.D. that matches the card being used. I can't remember the last time I wasn't asked for I.D. when paying with a credit card, even at a popcorn cart. A rude response to the CM who is asking for I.D. will not make the question disappear nor make the transaction go more smoothly.

Update: My sister's husband drove and met them early this morning with her license. She was thinking about having him fax the license to her, but ended up just asking him to meet them. School wise, he was able to swing it.

To answer everyone else's questions: They live a little over 2hrs away from DL. My sister had driven with the kids and cousin, so she was the only adult in the car. She was VERY lucky she didn't get pulled over, but had pulled out her ID to fill out a form online that required her driver's license # at home the day before and left it at the computer. (For people with small kids, you can understand how easy that would be to do). She drove to a friend's house, so there was no ID needed to check into a hotel. ID for the credit card in DL she wasn't worried about because she was planning on just taking out a few dollars at the ATM before heading to the parks the first day. Her hubs was going to join them for the second day, so she would've had her ID for the next two days. She had her whole wallet; just not her driver's license. The main concern was if she could use something other than her license, because she did have her student ID on her (which is a So Cal school). But, her hubs brought her license down so crisis averted.

Hope that answered everyone's questions and helped make this story less "fishy"...haha. And thanks to everyone who offered some great suggestions. I really appreciated it!!!

I'm in the park today and used my socal ticket and she did ask for ID. She barely looked at it for about 2 seconds.

ID check exists to protect YOU and your bank from fraudulent transactions. I THANK anyone who checks my ID, and if someone else were to try and use my card, I would want them to deny them that use without my ID and not be intimidated into backing off the request by anyone who is a jerk to them. This is exactly what frauds will try to do.

The thing I LOVE about Disney Magic and CMs is that if you come at them like this, they have the most eloquent, cheerful, and respectful way to tell you to go pound sand.

Exactly. I have witnessed this at Smokejumpers Grill. A teenage girl was trying to use a credit card and she had no ID. She was with her boyfriend. The CM calmly and politely said she couldn't allow her to use that card without ID and simply asked the boyfriend if he wanted to use his card to pay for their lunch. The girl tried to argue and the CM, in Spanish, began to talk to the girl in a more friendly way, explaining she could get fired for accepting a credit card without ID and also said something along the lines of, other CMs might do it but they're not supposed to and she didn't want to get in trouble. She suggested to the girl to not try it again because she could technically have the credit card confiscated.

Do you know if she looked to see if name matches or checking address? I am going with my sister who lives in southern Ca. last time we went she just needed ID to buy but they did not check mine. I don't know weather to take a chance and have to pay more a gate or just order from last minute travel and get a lower price than gate price?

I went when it was very busy day, and I don't know exactly what they were looking for.
My guess is that they were looking at the picture, whether it was a California drivers license and perhaps the city or zip code.

Each day I used the ticket they asked for id.

I do know that when your ticket is scanned they immediately know it's a socal ticket, so that fact is probably encoded into the scan, and probably shows up on their screen.

Perhaps in the past, the ability for the cm to immediately know it's a socal ticket wasn't implemented yet, which is why they didn't check at the gate, but that's just speculation. They could have just been more lax in the past.

Ahhh... no.
It protects your bank perhaps, but not you. You are NEVER liable for fraudulent charges. Your bank may tell you that it protects "you" simply so you put up with the hassle of showing ID... which protects THEM.

They're required to match identifying information. If you don't sign the back of your card so that they can compare signatures, they can refuse the transaction without ID. If this is an issue, and no AP or other discounts apply to your transaction, try another method of payment. Cash, gift card, a debit card with your photo on it.

They are checking ID's. We have AP, but bought a 3 day SoCal pass for my daughter's friend who joined us for a quick trip last week. They asked for my ID on the first day (I'm assuming as they activated it) and took her photo as usual, but did not ask for my ID on our 2nd day.

You have the right to refuse to show ID, and they probably will not process the transaction. VISA and MasterCard do not require them to take ID if the card is signed. So you can refuse, Disney can not process the transaction, then you can call your credit card company and lodge your complaint, but it won't get you those Mouse ears.

What we are talking about here is showing ID to get a discount.

I show my AP to get a discount, they ask for ID to prove I'm the AP holder. No ID, no discount.

Military and Retired Vet tickets they have been doing that for years. Using one of those tickets, an active duty or retired service member has to be there with you, with ID.

And this year, if you want to use a SoCal discount ticket, you have to have a valid ID.

You don't HAVE to show ID, just as you don't have to submit to search.... but if you want to get into the park, you have to submit to search, and if you want the SoCal discount, you have to show valid ID that proves you qualify for the discount.
