Thats where my mind is today. Travelling 4/19 and haven't heard about any sickness lately. Could it be possible that the so called epidemic is over? if anyone knows...please comment.

Not sure if I had the sickness or not. But, the last night on the ship I had a terrible belly ache.........the entire next day after getting off the ship I had terrible cramps and diahrrea. AT first I thought maybe something disagreed w/ me......but it lasted through yesterday.......3 days after getting off the ship. I never got sick sick though. I could have just had gastrointeritis (sp?) or something.....who knows. My husband and my 5 kids did not have it. I knew of no one on our ship that was ill. I was so careful to wash me hands A LOT while on the boat too. I was wondering if maybe when I took a shower at Castaway Cay if maybe I got some of the water in my mouth? Silly I know.....but you know what they say...don't drink the water.

Just off the 3/15 7 day and we had a total of 9 in our group. None of us got sick. Our older son hardly ever washes his hands so I figured for sure he would get sick. The rest of washed hands lots. In our room was a card that explained when, how often and how long to wash your hands. We had to chuckle because if you washed them everytime that Disney suggested you would be in the bathroom washing your hands for the whole cruise.;) :D

From what I understand - there never was really an "epidemic".
The numbers of people getting sick on the cruise lines during the "epidemic" were in line with the number that normally get sick during a cruise. It must have been a slow news day somewhere and all of the news organizations jumped on the "story" (because they didn't want to be left behind). With our short attention spans, they moved on to other other stories a few weeks later. And people are still getting sick.

Just to clarify - according to the CDC this was the worst year for the Norwalk Virus since the 1970's and YES they considered in an epidemic because of the high numbers. It was by no means restricted to cruise ships, but shut down schools, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. It does seem to be slowing down, but there are still cases cropping up here in the Seattle area and two or three schools have been closed in the last 6 weeks. It just has to run it's course and hopefully won't come back this strong for another 20 or so years.

We just got back from the 3/15 Western Magic also. My 3 yr old was attempting to play with another boy before one of the shows and the other boy's dad pulled him back and explained that his 1 yr old son had a confirmed case of Norwalk and that the baby and his Mom were quarantined. We saw the mom and dad the next evening in Palo and they told us that the baby was getting better, they were out of quarantine and no one else was sick. They were leaving for home from Cozumel the next day. They told us that they knew of about 9 other people in quarantine besides their son. It still is out there, but it's not the ship, it's the people coming on the ship who are infected and close quarters aids in the spread. I carried around a tube of anti-bacterial hand wash and the four in my family were CONSTANTLY using it. No sickness with us, thank goodness.

For as bad as the norwalk virus can be while experiencing it, it is over in a few days, though it can be serious I would be much more alarmed of any cases of the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) on a cruise ship. In CHina 34 have died and in Toronto 3 have died and 1000's may have been affected. Hey, Toronto is only 90 miles from my home, another country but very close. I wouldn't stay home for fear of norwalk but would for SARS. These are diseases spread in close contact and not too many places to move to on a ship. Scary to have to think of these things, and risk is low at this time, let's hope it stays off low risk and off ships!

This has been a very hard winter here in New England.. Strep infections (including mutant -resistant ones that my own DS had for over a month) are running rampent.. We have three children in my preschool class (out of 20) who now have scarlet fever from the strep not being able to be contained.. last week we only had ten children one day which is 50 percent of the class out sick.. there is a bad stomach bug going around as well.. so I TRUELY think it is just a bad year for sickness and irresponsible people that CHOOSE to go ahead and infect people so their time won't be ruined. You are as safe on a ship as you are at the mall or anywhere else in my opinion.

Just back from the 3/23 Wonder and noone from our party got sick and I didn't see anyone sick. There are reminders all over the ship to wash your hands and when to wash your hands. They also made DD wash her hands as she entered the club. They didn't do this for our 7 day July 2002. We also washed our hands and avoided contact with handrails etc.

We just got back from the magic 3/22 and we did not see anyone
sick on board. It was one of my concerns also. We tried to wash
our hands as much as possible. Its like your always touching
something on the boat, mostly railing. We never even had a ache. We brought antibacterial lotion along with us and used it
when we were back in the cabin. Have a great cruise. It's the
best. ;)

I was glad to see this post because I was on the 3/16 cruise (4-day Wonder) and had this the whole time. It didn't ruin my trip, but boy did I sleep a lot and was really tired. I have a cruise booked for Dec. (which was suppose to be our first), and I'm hoping I can talk my husband into going again so soon so I can
enjoy it this time without being so tired.
