Do people not know trick or treating rules anymore? If the house has the porch light on that means its open for treats. So annoying that I've already had 2 families come by and the light is not on.

I am not answering my door if they knock but yes it is annoying. If it happens I may hand them frozen bags of Brussel Sprouts :scratchin

So annoying. My lights are on and the yard is decorated. I have a bowl full of treats and no one has knocked nor have they rung the bell. Fewer and fewer kids ever year. I really love seeing the kids in their costumes. :sad1:

We used to give out candy, then the kids all started to go to churches so we were left with tons of candy and no kids. So we just don't do it anymore.

that's just not on-hope you don't get any further disturbances :)

Do you have decorations? There are a lot of people around us who put up decorations but don't pass out candy. They get a lot of knocks because of it.

We found it very confusing tonight. People with lights off, but still handing out candy...people with major Halloween decorations, but no candy...sure would be nice if everyone subscribed to the "light on- candy, light off- no candy", but they don't!

We had no decorations except for pumpkins on the porch. I took my own out trick or treating, cold and rainy here. We didn't stay out long.

I go to places I know have kids, those homes are usually kid friendly. I took my son out and made sure someone was at my home to give out candy to any trick or treaters that came by.

hate it, we had our light on earlier and turned it off when we ran out of candy, only a small foyer light,, so someone comes up and rings bell, i ingore it,, i know they can see me thru the side windows but so what,, my light is OFF,, so they ring AGAIN,, um hello still not moving, get a clue, LOL

Halloween etiquette 101...If you go out Trick or Treating, then you should reciprocate by answering the door at least a few times.

Seriously, if nothing else sort out the losers from your kid's treats and retreat them.

My kids are past Trick or Treating but I'm half way through 6 bags of candy.

This was our experience tonight. I think part of the problem was trick or treating started before it was dark and some people didn't think about turning their lights on. And there were a few houses with lots of decorations but no one answered the door.

Some kids either don't know the rule or get so excited they forget about it. DD was going around with a group of about 7 kids and there were 4 of us adults walking with them. The kids are getting older so they rush a little ahead of us adults. We'd see them start up to a house without a light on and we'd call out to them "There's no light. Go to the next house." Sometimes they'd hear us and turn around. Other times they were so caught up in it that they'd knock on the door before they realized what we were telling them. I can see how it would be annoying if there was constant knocking on your door, but it's one night of the year and 2 families knocking is not the end of the world. Just don't answer.

In my old town the lights rule was common knowledge. Here no one knows about it; none of the other parents follow it that I know.

Last year on Halloween we brought DD home from the hospital. None of the lights were on outside and the only light on inside was our kitchen at the back of our house. 5 sets of kids knocked (the previous year we actually handed out candy and only 1 kid came). Our dog barked every time and woke our 2 day old baby up. I was so mad.

People were knocking on our door while we were eating dinner. I'm not going to interrupt dinner to go answer it since the light was off. Just because we go out trick or treating doesn't mean I have to reciprocate and give out candy. Half the people who come to my neighborhood are dropped off in herds by car and are way too old to be out scrounging for free candy anyway. I donated candy to my children's school Halloween Festival.

Same here...many people trick to treating that don't live in the neighborhood. Doesn't bother me.

If you only want to donate to the Festival then only go there. I did Trunk or Treat at my school's Festival Saturday night.

I stand by my statement. If you participate then don't just be a taker be a giver too. It's good karma.

We kept trying to tell the kids 'no light, no knock' but sometimes they'd run too far ahead and get excited. One guy was handing out candy but didn't have his light on up on his porch. I couldn't see him from the street so when I yelled at DD to not bother that house because their light wasn't on, he popped out, waved and turned on his light. :rotfl2: We did trick or treat in a friend's neighborhood but I brought bags to supplement our friend's bowl. They're Laffy Taffy kind of people, while I'm a chocolate kind of girl so it evens out. I can't imagine taking my kid out and not reciprocating.

As a single mother, I have taken my kids out and not had anyone to pass out candy. Once my oldest was old enough to stay home alone, he passes the candy while I take the little ones out. My parents always split it up. One takes the kids out, one passes candy out. What makes me angry is when I see mom and dad taking the kids and no one passing out candy at their home. I was surprised at how many houses were decorated and not passing out candy. Really...if you decorate the outside of your home....someone should be there to pass out.

DH is out of town this week, so I went out with the kids because they wanted to go out. The last few years we got only 2-3 trick or treaters at our door (not many kids in our neighborhood, dead end road, no sidewalks...not prime trick or treat territory). So yeah, we went out and didn't pass out candy this year. But I don't feel guilty about it because we were married for many years before we had kids and we always gave out candy then (and for most of those years we lived in large apartment complexes where we'd get upwards of 200 kids), and we'll continue to give out candy for whatever kids happen to come to our door long after our kids are gone. So maybe it hasn't been 'fair' for the last few years, but over the 22 years we've been married, it more than evens out.

That's the thing here. ToT goes from 3:30 to 7pm and it just barely starts getting dark around 6:30 so there is no way to tell if someone has their lights on until ToT is almost over.
