As some of you know my saga I am looking for a new job. A friend of mine from the company I was let go from got a hold of another company for me as he knew the HR person. He gave her my resume and right away she gave it to the recruiter for this job.

The recruiter called me up on Tuesday and did a phone interview with me asking me all the typical interview questions as I was totally unexpecting it I think I did ok (or so I thought) . When we were done talking she said she wanted to set up an interview with me Thursday but had to check with the people I would be interviewing for and would confirm with me via email. Well....she never sent me an email and has my correct email address.

I wouldn't have cared if she said she didn't want to set something up for me but she did. I would have rather of her said nothing at all and she will contact me if she wanted to pursue it further....but she said she was going to try to set something up for Thursday morning at 9:30am. I thought about calling her (she never left me her # just have it on my caller id). so I guess I will wait it out and she if she ever gets back to me. Maybe she was just busy or changed her mind.

AGHH...thanks for letting me vent

DH had the same issues when he was looking for another job. Recruiters would call, talk him up set up interviews or promise an interview and then disappear. One HR person at a company in MN went so far as to send us info on schools and houses as we would have to relocate. Then nothing. It is maddening but I think it has become the norm.

Sorry for your frustration...

My girlfriend went through a similar situation recently as she had been looking for a job. My best advice: follow up, follow up, follow up! HR folks and recruiters are people too; they get busy, or lose contact info, or sometimes just plain forget. It's good to call them up and remind them every once in awhile that you still exist:thumbsup2 .

I would recommend callingher up, reminding her of who you are, and asking if there's any additional information she might need or if there's anything else you could do.

Job hunting is hard; hang in there!

I would follow up too. It shows them you are interested in them. And whats the worst that can happen? They tell you no, then at least you know and at least you tried.

Does your email have a spam blocker on it? Could it have possibly mistaken an email from that company as spam and dumped it?

Definitely call her back. Follow up on any lead especially since you did get a telephone interview. I had an interview scheduled, canceled, and they said they would call back to reschedule. I ended up e-mailing and calling them a few days later. They never did get back to me but you never know when they will. Follow every opportunity!

I agree - call back! Follow-up :)
Good luck in your search!!

I had that happen too. I had an interview scheduled that was cancelled. The company told me they would get back with me to reschedule, but never did. I figured maybe it was a blessing in disguise as in maybe it wasn't going to be a good place to work for anyway. I also have applied with two different recruiters and really never got anywhere with either. One never called me on anything. I really didn't follow-up either although I should have. The other I only ever got action when I called or emailed them and then they'd disappear after that never to be heard from again. Apparently according to the rest of you, that's the norm. It doesn't make any sense to me though. Aren't they supposed to help place you? It seems like you go in, do all their testing, and nothing happens. I figure I'll just go it alone. I don't think recruiters are much good at least not in my experience. I'd rather negotiate and work directly with the employer anyway.

I'm reading this thread with great interest as I myself work in recruiting.

By the sounds of things, it appears that I am a minority when it comes to recruiting potential employees. When I say I'll call or email someone back, I do - no excuses, even if it is to let them know that they may not be a fit for the particular position they applied for. It's only common courtesy. Laziness or fear of confronting the potential candidate is not an excuse. Just because they didn't fit with one position, doesn't mean they won't be a fit for another.

Unfortunately telephone interviews are a way to screen out candidates and they usually know before they are off the phone with you whether or not a face to face interview will be the next step. Leading a potential employee on is just not ethical IMHO.

It sounds as if most of the recruiters you've dealt with don't really care about how people view their company. Unfortunately they also don't realize that that person will tell 2 or 3 people about their bad experience, who will tell 2 or 3 people and so on ... and as a result when a job opened up they wouldn't apply for a job at that company because of that one bad experience. IMHO I wouldn't want to work for a company like that either!

I always follow the Golden Rule - treat others the way you would want to be treated - whether in my personal or professional life. Unfortunately others are not like that.

... just my 2 cents.

I'm glad you aren't the norm as I am sure there are a few good agencies out there....just haven't been able to find one. This recruiter called directly from the company b/c the name of the actual company showed up on my caller id. I agree...she should have said we will get back to you if you are a fit etc....not I want to set up an apt for such time and date and will email you with a confirmation. I have checked my junk email and nothing from her was in there. Maybe its a blessing in disguise again....

you don't happen to recruit people for NY or CT area? ;) ;)

I manage a group of employees where I work, so do quite a bit of hiring in my position. I just wanted to say that you have every right to want to vent. Keep in mind that you are interviewing the employer too, and their actions should provide you with information about whether working for them would be a good fit for you. When the employer is disorganized throughout the hiring process, or has lack of follow through, that is a red flag in my book.

In your case, I think a follow up with the recruiter is warranted. I would indicate you are following up because you were advised you would hear something about the in-person interview by Thursday and did not. I would listen closely to the response of the recruiter. If there was some emergency that kept her from contacting you, well then fine, maybe you can forgive that.

I think that it was poor planning on the recruiters part not to have the in-person interview details ironed out before you had your phone interview, especially considering the plan at your phone interview on Tuesday was for the in-person interviews to occur just two days later. It generally takes more than two days to put an interview panel together, when you have to factor in everyone's schedule.
