Shawna ... she is a vegetarian by choice because she doesn't like the texture, taste and as she says "she is morally opposed to how the animals are treated".... but she has never liked meat... she has never had a hamburger... even as a little kid we couldn't get her to eat one... she used to eat chicken... now the only time we can get chicken in her is when the doctor threatens a visit to the hospital.... then its only a couple of bites... and the look on her face is priceless.... now she is 20 yrs old an pretty much handles her own menu because she is away at school...

Thanks for the tips guys! I will keep trying to offer a variety of food, but I'm trying to get them to just taste things too. They will eat more meat like steak (!) and pork chops, so that's good. Veggies are tougher. Of course, DH and I are not big into veggies. He won't eat anything green. It's true.

I really should have expected picky kids. When I was a kid, I would not eat ground beef. Not hamburgers, meatballs, meatloaf, spaghetti, nothing. When I was 9 we were traveling and there was only a McDonalds and they didn't sell hot dogs. So I tasted my mom's hamburger. I finished it. The rest is history.

Shawna - I'm heading over to your TR. I posted a lot on mine this weekend and I'm tired!! Have to go load more on photobucket so I can do some updating at work this week while the boss is on vacation! (No not to WDW!)

I myself am a picky eater. I was growing up too. My siblings liked more than I did, but I always had to try. If I didn't want to eat what my mother made, then I didn't get dinner. Trust me, it only took a couple nights before I tried different foods. Some I really didn't like, but I tried it.

I'm so excited, Snowbirds. The dining gods are smiling on me today. I've been trying 3 times a day for more than a week to get a ressie at Chef Mickey's. All of the sudden, 3 time slots open up today for the day that I want. My persistence pays off!

Yay! that's soo great!

I had a similar experience when I was younger, except it was a chicken sandwich. Before, I would just get french fries at McDonald's. I may have eaten chicken nuggets at McDonald's at some point, but I doubt it. I still to this day have never eaten a hamburger. It took me forever before I tried steak.

For a while when I was younger my parents tried to make me eat. Picture them trying to shove peas between my teeth. I would just sit at the table for hours. Eventually they just let me get something for myself at meals. I did try a lot of stuff, but my parents used a lot of ground beef which is one thing to this day that makes me gag.

I would say just continue to offer them other options. Maybe offer them something new first, then allow them to eat something they know they like. The doctors told my Mom when I was growing up that the important thing was making sure I was eating, even if it meant peanut butter and jelly for every meal.
I'm not sure what I'll do about my kids, hopefully they all get their father's taste buds and eat everything.

A question for you Shelly - (and anyone else who wants to chime in)
I know you have picky eaters at your house. I do too. My kids survive mostly on breakfast foods, (not including cereal), chicken nuggets, hot dogs and mac and cheese.
I was wondering how you handle it at home. Do you make a "regular" meal for you and DH and then make the kids something they like? We've been struggling with this lately. I don't want to eat that stuff very often, and while DD6 will try things, DD8 does not try much. So I keep trying to make normal meals and hope they'll like it, but ... they always seem to end up with a PBJ or something.

TIA

I almost always have to make 2 different meals. One for DH and I and one for the kids. It is frustrating at times. But it is something that I have always had to deal with. DS8 has sensory issues. He had stomach surgery at one month old and then had to have a therapist come teach him to eat at about 1 1/2 until he was about 3. He had so many stomach issues and reflux that he associated food with pain. He has outgrown this to a point, but not entirely. So some of his eating problems stem from that, but I wouldn't say it is entirely that. He is very picky too! DS10 has been picky too, but not near as bad. Probably just something he got from me. I'm a little picky when it comes to food too. But I do love to eat! DS10 has been eating a lot more lately. Bigger portions, but not a much bigger variety. So I have hopes that he is coming out of it. DS8 may never change. He won't even try new things usually. All we can do is keep trying!

So yes, unfortunately I am always making several different things for one meal. Sometimes the boys just eat sandwiches, and they are happy with that. There are a few things I can make for us all to eat -- spaghetti is always good, they just eat theirs with no sauce. :upsidedow

I end up making something different for my kids but they also get some of whatever I'm making too. DD usually eats what we eat. DS is a whole other story. I pack him PB&J (hold the jelly), cereal or cheese and crackers for school EVERYDAY. At home it's no better. He'll eat chicken nuggets, mac n cheese, apples, mandarin oranges, plain noodles with a little butter and a few other things but that's it. Potatoes make him vomit- in any form other than a french fry. That's been since he was a baby for some reason. I think it's a texture thing. :confused3 We actually tried to bribe him the other day to try ketchup for the first time. :lmao: He wouldn't even attempt it.
We have the QSDDP this trip and are basically planning on her eating his meals and he will probably survive the whole week on applesauce, pb bread, and cereal.

Just got a minute to pop in and say hi! As far as the food and kids....my ds14 has always had the sensory thing:in kindergarten the school called for me to come pick him up because he had vomited after morning snack. When I got there the nurse (very sarcastically) said "He told me it was because of ANIMAL CRACKERS"...But he threw up so he has to go home. To which I said" oh, yeah...he has a thing about any food that gets soggy when he chews it---he'll throw up every time. Bread, animal crackers, crackers,...whatever....he isn't sick...it WAS the crackers." She looked at me like I was lying! Ha!! Who would make that up? Anyhoo...she said, well, he still HAS to go home. I said great, we are headed out. Then I asked him where could I take him for lunch!! ha!! We had a great day!!!!! He doesn't eat potatoes either...some French Fries, but not many..he will on occasion eat McDs fries, and sometimes the waffle fries at CFA....but not very often.
DS10 will eat pretty much anything....and dd6 is pickier than the boys...she will eat brocolli with Ranch!! She just doesn't eat much at a time...she is soooo much smaller than they were at her age...my boys are going to be BIG men! ha!!!

Thank you all for the food info and comments. I can appreciate the pickiness better knowing it's not unusual! We'll all keep plugging away trying to keep our kids healthy and growing right??

So today we hit 30 days until our trip... I am so excited... it so cold here... can't wait to see green instead of white snow!!!

Hi Snowbirds!
Thanks for reminding me to count my blessings, such as the fact that my kids are not too picky when it comes to eating. :thumbsup2 DS11 will eat most everything we eat. DS9 is not quite there, but he'll at least try (even if unwillingly ;) ) and sometimes decides to make himself a PB&J. They would both be perfectly happy with spaghetti and/or chicken nuggets every night, though.

:cheer2: YAY for 30 days, Wendy! :cheer2:
I've seen you posting on the SOG thread (which I still follow...not sure why, since it will be several years at least before we're back there!)

Becca--hang in there! It's all worth it in the end! :goodvibes

Yes I do... they have had many changes since our last stay there... good to keep up on whats happening... we really love that resort.... I requested the Magnolia building again this time... we actually like the lobby level as close to the lobby as possible...pool side... nothing picky about us!!!! We don't mind the noise... I like it because my DS spends alot of time on the putting green and I can sit on the balcony and watch him.... he will be 17 when we are there and doesn't need me "watching" him... but I still do.... its great to sit there with a glass of wine and enjoy the view... my boys are a little bummed that they closed Evergreens... they really liked the burgers and stuff there... actually we had planned on eating a few meals there ...oh well... I am sure we can make do...

What we do have planned for meals are...
Valentines Day... which happens to be our 24th Wedding Anniverary... Victoria and Alberts... I can't wait...
Then we are going to go to Marakesh and the Yatchsman steakhouse... both of which I have been to and enjoy very much....

I am going to try and find some of our photos from Disneyland Paris... we were there right after it first opened... I was pregnant with Daniel... Maggie was only 3... OMG.. I am getting old... it was beautiful... I am sure many changes have been made since then...

Hey Snowbird Pals & Gals! :goodvibes

Could I please ask a favor? Would those of you are inclined to do such a thing please say a prayer for a little friend of ours? She was in a pretty nasty sledding accident tonight and is in the hospital right now with a slight depression on the back of her skull. She is almost 10 yrs old and her name is Emily (no it is not my daughter!) Last I hear she was having a CAT scan done! Thanks friedns! I will keep you posted! :goodvibes

Oh SOG is really great!! We last stayed there in 2006 when we celebrated Paige's 3rd b-day. I hope you have a great time and a great anniversary. And you are NOT getting old. But how long ago was it when DLParis opened? Honestly, I don't know that !

Aw :lovestruc Congratulations! What a great place to celebrate!

It is too bad about Evergreens closing. The main complaint about SOG seems to be the food. :sad2:
