Snow tubing at PA/MD ski resorts? (White Tail, Liberty, Round Top, Wisp...)

My mom wants to take the kids snow tubing. We've been to Wisp in Deep Creek Lake, MD, several times, and the tubing there is awesome, but it's a long drive. The PA ski resorts are closer, but they went to Round Top a couple of years ago and hated the tubing there. The slopes weren't steep enough, and they couldn't get up enough momentum to get all the way down the hill.

Has anyone been tubing at White Tail or Liberty? Or recently at Round Top (IOW, has it improved in the last couple of years?)

We go to Round Top for tubing every year with the scouts, sometimes the slopes are great and we fly past the end of the run and sometimes the slopes are very slow. I have only been to Round Top for tubing, so I have nothing to compare it to. We also don't have to pay since the scouts take care of that part! I'm not sure that I would be anxious to go there if I had to pay. One thing to keep in mind is that we have not had any snow yet in our neck of the woods, so all the snow at Round Top has been man made so far. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

My DD works at the tubing lift at Whitetail. I'll have to ask her how steep it is. She tubed there after work this past Sunday. I'll have to get back with you later on this.

We've been to Round Top, Liberty & Whitetail in the past couple of years. We get a tubing pass/package each year. Liberty & Whitetail are about the same distance from us - just opposite directions. This year it was $75 for 6 two hour tubing sessions. The pass is good for through the 2006 season. I think the quality of the tubing depends on the weather. Last year we went to Whitetail 2x about 2 weeks apart. The first time, the tubing wasn't so great - the temp was in 40s so there was a great deal of melting. The 2nd time the hills were extremely fast - the temp was below freezing. Just asked the boys, they perfer Whitetail when it is icy. (They are 9 & almost 11.) As the keeper of the hot chocolate, my favorite is Liberty. You can actually see the tubing hill from the warming lodge - A-frame type building with huge windows on two sides. Whitetail has a more traditional recetangular building with only one picture window on the tubing side - but there is a tree line between the building & the hill. It's been two years since we went to Roundtop - they hadn't build their tubing lodge yet. Don't know if it's in.
PM me if you'd like more info. They have webcams at the internet sites. www.skiwhitetail.com www.skiliberty.com www.skiroundtop.com
I could go on & on. We are planning to take a group of 5th grade boys tubing for DS's 11th birthday in 3 weeks - probably to Whitetail so wdwmom2 warn your DD. :bday:

looking for a good place to take my 3 year olds tubing within 80 - 100 miles of Philly in early February. Any ideas. BTW, they are only 36" tall, and I know that some places want 42" tall to tube.

Liberty is near Gettysburg - depending on which side of Philly you are one, it may be within 100 miles. They have a designated tubing area for the little ones - and the nice warming lodge for your adoring wife. My then 8 yr old, who was plenty big enough for the large hill, decided to go off the back of the mini hill - straight into the parking lot & the path of an oncoming bus :scared: DSiL was with him & couldn't even look to see if he was ok - she was certain he was history. Thankfully the bus stopped & he walked away - wondering what all the fuss was about. Don't worry the hill is safe. DS thought he was being cute and went under a fence to accomplish his near death experience.

Mom2Boys, what did your kids think about the actual tubing at Liberty?

Don't forget Seven Springs and Hidden Valley in PA. I'm not sure where you are but they are close to Somerset, PA (in case you want a reference point). I can't vouch for the tubing but there are some decent skiing there. Maybe others can be a better reference for these two resorts.

We ski rather than go tubing, and always enjoy Seven Springs. Its the best of the ski resorts in the mid-Atlantic area, we think.

They had a great time tubing at Liberty. In fact, when I asked which of the three they liked best one immediately said Liberty & the other Whitetail. We didn't get to Liberty last winter. We had planned to make our 2nd outing to Liberty but the cub scout pack announced a trip to Whitetail and we couldn't pass on that one.
from the website:
Boulder Ridge SNOW TUBING OPEN TODAY! Bring the family out today for some great winter fun, the whole family can snowtube! Snow tubing hours today are from 9:00am to 10:00pm. 10 lanes will be open today. Join us! (Sorry, kiddie tubing for under age 5 is not yet available.)
Webcam shots of Boulder Ridge tubing at Liberty - scroll down to last three photos on page. http://www.skiliberty.com/webcams.htm
Also check the website or call ahead. If I remember correctly, people tube within their 1 or 2 hour window on the hour. So everyone's time expires at the top of an hour. That's okay if you hit the trail close to the top of the hour, otherwise you will have to wait around. We try to time our arrive to about 20 minutes or so before the hour.
