They are more concerned at this point about the 2 day warm up & rain this weekend. The rain will add to the weight of the snow, which is not expected to melt due to the density/height of the accumulation. They said on CNN last night that the weight of the water logged snow is expected to bring down roof's (sp?)on homes & businesses and the added moisture will likely slow down the snow removal process in general as conditions deteriorate.
This wasn't a freak snowstorm.
It was a good old fashioned, classic lake effect storm, these are very common off all 5 of the Great Lakes, the ones in a Buffalo are driven bey Lake Erie - this kind of storm can occur anytime the conditions are right. Warm lake water, and extreme cold north or northwest winds with lift and you get this kind of mess. While 5 to 6 feet is an extreme, 3 to 5 feet is not uncommon.
We've experienced it as early as mid October and as late as April on cross border shopping trips & getaway's. We've also experienced the same in the Watertown NY area, south of Lake Ontario.
