How many snow days are your schools allotted? What do they do if they use more than they are given?

I am in Northeastern PA, and we are allotted 9 days, and then if we use them up we have to use our Spring Break (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Monday after Easter) to make it up, as well as our Memorial Day break. Our schools typically get out the second week of June. 2 years ago they did not use a week of their allotted days, so got out of school at the end of the first week of June.

Do you often have delays? We usually have 2 hour delays.

I did a search to find out how many snow days are allowed in the Syracuse City School District but couldn't find any info. I can say that we average 116" of the white stuff per season, and it's not uncommon to get more than 150". :Pinkbounc

That being said, it usually takes more than a foot of new snow to close us down. So more often, it is subzero wind chills that closes the schools. I remember one year when school was closed more than three days. I believe extra days were added on to the end of the school year.

I don't remember how many snow days we were given in Iowa when I was in school. But if we went over we had to make them up at the end of the year.

All snow days now have to be made up here and we always have snow days. They used to allow for a few, but not any longer.

We have no snow days built into our sched. b/c people got mad if we didn't use them all we still had to work them and not get paid. Stupid stupid! There are better ways of doing this!

We have five days built into our schedule, if we use more, they usually take 2 days out of our pitiful 4 day spring break (2 days before Easter, 2 days after). More than that, they either request a waiver from the state or add them to the end. Last year, we got a waiver for 2 or 3 days, and finished at the scheduled time. This year, we got 1 day excused already because of Hurricane Isobel.

We've gotten out as much as a week early when they didn't use the days.

We get 2 or 3 days allotted for snow days. If we go over that they take away from the 4 day memorial weekend and then take days away from the spring break. Once when we didn't use any we got an extra day onto memorial weekend.

We in Ohio have 5 days. If we don't use them we do NOT get out early. If we use more we tack them on to the end of the year, although that varies by district. Some districts will take MLK day or spring break days, but our administrators all go golfing over spring break so don't even THINK of suggesting it (sarcasm--we never go away on spring break so I wouldn't care, but I hate losing days of summer).
We sometimes also have 2 hour delays. We had one last week for a lot of fog. If the roads are icy we might also have a delay, hoping it gets better before they call off.
Last year we used 4 days. The year before we used 6 and had to tack one on at the end of the year. The worst ever since I've been teaching there is 11 days in 1993--the state forgave 4 days and we had to make two up. The sad thing is that if they get a lot of snow in Columbus (where the state lawmakers are) we are likely to be forgiven for some days--if not, we won't be. Only if it benefits Columbus.

Which school dictrict are you in Otto? I live in Pocono Mountain school district and we don't have scheduled snow days , if we have snow days we have to make them up at the end of the year, we usually get out at the end of May or first couple of days of June, but last year we didn't get out until mid June. We also start a week before everyone else and we get no more than 3 days break for easter and thanksgiving. That's it.

msKanga,
We are in the Delaware Valley School District in Pike County. We also only get 3 days for Thanksgiving and Easter, but hey, we do get the first day of hunting season off  Priorities, huh?
We get 9 days, as I have said, and we usually have a lot of 2 hour delays, but they do not count as missed days. We began school on Aug. 25 this year, and are slated to get out on June 11 next year.

I think they build 4 into the calendar here, with school closing usually June 10-15 or so... if they use more snow days they have to add days at the end of the year. They did a lot of 2 hour delays last year...we had a lot of storms and if they use a delay instead of the whole day off they dont' have to make it up when they go over 4.

I am in northeastern Maryland. We have no days bulit into the schedule. Any days missed have to be made up. Last year we had a week to add on at the end.

And like Lisa, we had a day off for Isabel but the state said we don't have to make it up.

I never thought about it. DD goes to a charter school, I will have to check it out
