So far in January our school system in CT has used 6 snow days. Last year we had none.

I planned a BCV trip in mid june. Initial plan was to check in BCV on the 19th and DW and DS(15) would fly down and meet me (I have a conference at the Swan three days prior.) His last day of school was scheduled to be the 15th of June.

Now that date has been pushed out to the 23rd and we still have Feb to get through. January was the snowest month on record in our area.

We likely will have to cancel our vacation since we cannot take him out of school. Not sure we can reschedule since DW goes in July with her family to another vacation spot (I don't go as they pack a small house like sardines) and she has no other time available during summer.

How many of you are facing the same thing and how do you plan to handle it?

We used to encounter this when we lived up by you, on the Connecticut/Massachusetts border. All I can tell you is that you won't be alone-lots of people already have plans when the schools try to figure out ways to make up extra snow days. Our only eventual solution was that at that time, the teachers were unionized (don't know now) and they had it in their contracts that they couldn't work after June 30. So we never made vacation plans til after June 30.

I see you are in TX and I also see that certain parts are frozen and have 4 inches of snow. Welcome to the new global warming. Of course Atlanta has about 9 snow days now but I understand schools cannot go beyond a certain date.

And on top of that the Obama Admin wants to extend the school year by an additional week to make us more competitive with other countries. Goodbye summer.

You may end up being OK. MOST school systems in CT are exploring alternate options to radically extending the school year right now. They're looking at canceling teacher in service days, shortening spring/April vacation, some have already cancelled the February vacation (we don't get that in our district) etc...but all that needs to be approved by the local Boards of Ed.

Our school system in New Hartford is talking about a couple different options and have been told they will make decisions in mid February at the next board of Ed meeting. Maybe contact the school system super or your school principal to see if there are any rumblings of similar changes to the calender.

I feel your pain...
My children were home for 3 snow days this week.
They finally had school today only to have the school evacuated two hours in to the day for roof cracks. :headache:

I think we always have atleast 3 or 4 snow days every year though...
Don't take this the wrong way... :goodvibes
But I think it was wishful thinking that the kids would get out of school on time for the year.
I would never plan anything hoping school gets out on time.
Maybe you will get lucky and they will fill in days another way.

I'm hoping they don't touch February Vacation here.
It is only a week away so I don't think they will.
I snagged some cheap expiring point to get away from here for Feb. Vacation week.
Now I only have to hope we get out okay.
No Valentine's Day Storms Please!

Here in East Haven we have had 8 snow days. :scared1: So since we started school a week late this year due to a poorly organized reconfiguration of the schools :headache:, unless something changes the kids will be in school until 6/30. I suspect that the superintendent is considering taking away either February of April vacation at this point. Honestly I hope it is February for several different reasons. First and foremost, I have a vacation planned for April break :cool1:. But if they cancel April break, the kids will miss school and we are still going to WDW. However, my bigger concern is the fact that the kids have had two snow days a week for the last four weeks and next week is shaping up to make it at least another 1 or 2 days. We have the CMT's in March and the kids really do not need another week off in February with all these snow days. I think it has been very hard on the kids (and their parents) in terms of their routines and learning to be disrupted so much with snow days, early dismissals (had 2 so far) and delayed openings (had three of them too). So we will just need to wait and see. Oh and by the way, if school actually goes to 6/30 as I think it will, the kids will miss the last 4 days as we are going to Disney's HHI from 6/26-7/3 . The make up days are only 1/2 days and I suspect that there will not be much learning going on in kindergarten and 5th grade at that point, so I am not worried

We've been out for the past 4 days. There are 2 days built into our calendar, but obviously we are now beyond that. We are booked on a flight out at 7 AM the day after school gets out, so ANY extension of the school year is a major problem. It screws up our flight, our points, everything. The district issued a statement today saying they will seek a waiver for the other days, so we'll see if that is really how things shake out.

If they added Friday, June 3 I was willing to pay the change fee and move our flight to the afternoon. Anything beyond that, and they should not expect to see DS in class those days. But they give exams those days to discourage absences, so I would have to plead my case to the principal for that.
