Hi all,
Any idea how they sanitize the mouthpieces on snorkle rentals at castaway cay? Any idea on the other snorkling excursions?
Thanks!
One month from TODAY:cheer2: we'll be on a MAGICAL adventure!

I believe they get sanitized with chlorine. At the end of the day, you just toss your snorkel into a tob filled with liquid, which I assume is a water/chlorine mix, which is common for disinfecting.

Not to scare everyone, but clients of mine cruised in Bermuda many years ago and he ended up getting a terrible mouth infection from snorkeling and ended up having to have all his teeth pulled. So just be careful that it is a reputable place and that it is done correctly.

EWWWW EWWW EWWWW:scared1:   :scared1:
This is why I bring my own.

Jackie:)

We always bring our own mask and snorkel (in part due to sanitary reasons). We usually leave our fins at home and rent them instead since they take up more space in the luggage.

We always bring our snorkels and fins. I think this gives us more peace of mind. We can keep our germs to ourselves. Even on the DCL excursions, as in Cozumel and Grand Cayman, we brought our own gear. :)

I am sure they do a thorough job, but it sort of freaks me out. So, I bought everyone snorkels for their Easter baskets. Fins don't bother me, but if I see some inexpensive ones, everyone will get fins too.

Okay, now I'm grossed out! For those of you who take your own, where do you buy them? Is it a pain to haul them with you?:confused3

We do a lot of snorkeling so we bought ours at a local dive shop. We don't usually pack our fins because they take up more space but a snorkel and mask doesn't take up too much room.

Germaphobe(slightly) here, I bring my own.:laundy:

Yuck!!! We're also ones who pack our own. Partly due to this issue (germs  ) and secondly due to costs... We found it was much cheeper in the long run for us to purchase our own then rent then at three diffrent ports.

Anyhow...many years ago we purchased our first set at a dive shop. Then a few years back be decieded to get some new ones...and found some nice ones at Costco....For a GOOD price. They came with the mask, snorkel and fins AND a nice bag to tote them in. So now we each have our own set that we carry off the ship in a handy backpack tote that they fit perfectly in. I think they were around $25 for the set. We got our a few years back...but they seem to carry them each year...and it's getting to be about that season.

Oh...another reason we pack our own is....masks can fit diffrently on everyone...so one mask that fits me my not fit my dh. By having our own we know our masks fit our face. Nothing worse than looking forward to snorkeling then have a mask that won't hold a seal.

We also bring our own snorkel gear as both DH and I wear prescription glasses so we need the same in our masks. I am a bit of a germ freak and the thought of putting a used snorkle in my mouth makes me gag.

Just my thoughts....

Birkner, Do you have custom masks/lenses or the OTC inserts? I know the OTC has two options, one can be applied over existing lens or there are the others that you can order for specific makes of masks. I switch back and forth between glasses and contacts. I have been looking into a RX mask, but I do not know anyone who uses them. Can you shed some light on the topic for me. I was thinking of getting the removal overlay's only so I dont have to pack two masks.

WOW! - I am glad I asked... Looks like I'll be picking up some snorkle sets at Sams this weekend.
thanks everyone for your input!

I am allergic to latex, so I bought my own set. They were easy to find and not any more expensive. Just read the package carefully.

I am extremely nearsighted, but I see perfectly underwater with just a normal clean lense mask. Never had a problem with germs on a snorkel in 35 years of snorkeling trips, on vacation I always rent gear there, not worth the hassle of packing it.
They do dip everything in a chlorine solution at Castaway Cay.

I have a cousin who went on a DCL cruise for his honeymoon and after snorkeling, developed some type of mouth infection. Landed him in the hospital for a few days. He was very sick. Not how you want to start off your marriage!

Will definately look into bringing our own gear!

We resently bough our daughters a set from Costco, relatively cheap.

cheers
