I know this may sound kinda funny, but......does anyone know if the snorkle gear (mouth piece) is sanatized? (spelling?) I was going to bring our own, but seems that we have enough stuff to pack! Thanks guys for such a great board!
I guess that depends on where you will be snorkeling. At Castaway Cay, when you return your equipment, you dip it in water with some kind of sanitizer before you turn it in.
I really don't know how the excursion companies do it. I would hope they all had some rules about this.
When we went to typhoon lagoon at WDW, I felt very confident that they were well cleaned. I don't remember exactly what they did, but I remember thinking they did a good job and seeing them come out "steaming".
Personally, we bring our own even if it is more to take. We brought our own last time, but didn't take it on the excursion because they provided equipment. The fins were fine, but we had a lot of problems with the masks. They seemed ok when we first put them on, but once we got going all of us had to keep adjusting them. Finally, I just ended up pushing the mask against my face with one hand.
if i were you i would bring your own. if your that worried. i saw them wash everything off with saltwater and normal water. i bring my own just cause i like it better. i hope this helps
Having just gotten back from a disney cruise -- I can tell you that Disney is "infectious agent" nuts! They give you an entire sheet of paper explaining ways to cut back/eliminate germ spreading. They don't even have an open buffet at happy hour in the promanade lounge (they just bring you a plate of wings, etc.) because, as our waiter told us, they don't want people picking food up with their hands....blahblahblah. I would think that the snorkel equipment - where people put their mouths - is sanitized beyond belief! Bleach, probably. And since bleach can cause the hardening and breakdown of soft plastic, that's why the masks quickly lose their fit. We've rented equipment twice and have never had a problem.
I would certainly think the equipment needs to be properly sanitized. Can you imagine the lawsuits if someone were transmitted a deadly disease due to equipment not being sanitized? I know at preschool we must treat everything with bleach and it is even a violation of code if we don't let the bleached item airdry.
We take our own because we don't usually book excursions. It is difficult to pack but it really depends on how often you plan to snorkel (CC is in our experience not the greatest for snorkeling but we have enjoyed it at other beaches while in port). We find it worth the trouble because we use it at least three times on the 7 day cruise. Plus, I know where my gear has been! Hope this helps!
Actually, you get an idea on how clean the Disney ship and Castaway Cay is when you watch the program on the Travel Channel. They show them cleaning some items for Castaway Cay, making up rooms, etc.
