Hi, my husband has his own snorkeling gear, but not the vest. I know " officially" it is required, but do they actually make people wear them? Do they provide it for free or make him rent the entire snorkel set just for the use of the vest?

Yes, on CC they are required in the snorkel area. Vests are free and you do not need to rent the equipment.

on CC they will make you wear them. If you don't, the lifeguards sitting to the left and right of the snorkeling lagoon will call you out. Lifevests are hanging off the lifeguard tower on the beach and are free, I believe!

Yes, as the last poster said, you are required to wear them at CC and the lifeguards are continually yelling at people to put them on if you are snorkeling. My ds was only using the mask, not the tube, so I asked the lifeguard and she said it was only necessary if you used the tube. After he started drifting further and further out from the beach, I brought him back and made him wear it. Later I tried to help him get out to the snorkel area and it was a long trip over water too deep to walk in. I'm thankful we both had jackets, because it was tough going trying to haul a nervous 8YO that far! :rotfl:

But I've read that other people just wear the jacket and don't inflate it. So if he is resistant to the life vest, you might suggest that option.

Thanks for all the info!No he isn't resistant to wearing it, we are just cheap and don't want to spend 32.00 on a rental of an unnecessary vest!
