Snorkeling equipment

As for masks buying a cheap one is NOT always the best way to go! Before we snorkeled we bought some cheap Body Glove ones at a outdoor store here and tried them out for a few minutes in a local pool when we took our kids. They seemed to be fine but for some reason once we got out in the ocean snorkeling the things were terrible! We came home and bought a great mask and snorkel set at our local dive shop and paid about 70 dollars but we have had them for almost 3 years and numerous snorkel and dive trips and still havent had any problems. Surprisingly our straps havent even broke yet!

We bought our body Glove sets from sams club and NEVER had a problem at all with any of them. (3 sets @ $48 each.) In the ocean, pool or anywhere else.
Sorry that you experienced this. I'm wondering if Body Glove sells a cheaper set then the one at sams club or if they were the same ones?
Great tips about cleaning off the salt water, we did the same thing and then let them soak in the tub in fresh water.

LostBoyinVA is my DH. He mentioned in an earlier thread he couldn't remember the cost. He paid $30.00 for his snorkel gear at Costco. He mentioned buying it at Walmart. DH bought snorkel gear at the Walmart in Orlando 4 years ago, he had some problems with his snorkel.

We bought ours at Galyans and we paid about $40.00 for the set. (Cant remember the exact cost it's been too long ago) but it was just a basic mask and snorkel set. It had a mesh carry bag with it that matched the color of the set. We bought the same brand for our kids last year at Costco and they havent seemed to have much problem with them but our set for hubby and I were terrible! I have heard that some people do well with them and others have problems. Maybe hubby and I have odd shaped faces or something. I know for the 10 min in the swimming pool they were fine but for over an hour in the ocean they were awful. I wonder if the difference between the pool and the ocean could have been the fact that we had sunblock on our faces and it caused the mask to leak but I dont know for sure...it seemed to just get worse and worse by the minute. I am glad to know some people have had good luck with them!

Face shape is very critical for a good mask fit. If your face is "standard" then the cheaper masks may work. If your face is thin or very wide, or your nose is shorter, thinner, longer or your upper lip hairy or short then you may have problems with cheap masks. My husband and I have some combo of all of the above (DH has the hairy lip, thank you very much), and often have tried on many different masks to find the proper one. The older, more rigid ones had to be "sucked on" for proper fit. The new soft, clear, silica ones shold form a perfect seal simply when you tip your head back, with snorkel in mouth (remember your upper lip shape isn't going to be normal). There should be NO GAP WHATSOEVER anywhere on your face for the mask to work the best. If you cannot try it on and test it, don't buy it. Make sure you get every stray strand of hair out of the mask before snorkeling, these will cause leaks. Remember to scrub your mask well with soft-scrub (or the best masks-scouring powder) to remove all oils used in processing, these cause fogging. As noted above, buy good stuff, keep it clean and it will last decades (not kidding). Look in the yellow pages, you may be surprised to find dive shops in just about every fair-sized city. Their help can save a cheap or expensive mistake.

We have one of the back-pack type dive bags and it is wonderful. We had seven persons in our party, so not sure what our luggage count was, but having the bag was not a problem on the airlines or cruise. Just make sure the sky-cap puts it in one of the heavy plastic bags when you check it, too many dangly straps to trust the luggage conveyers. Don't forget old t-shirts so you don't toast your back and a zip-lock bag of kleenex for the inevitable blow when you get out of the water.
