Snorkeling castaway cay

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me about the amount of fish castaway cay snorkeling lagoon has this time of year? I am planning to traverse the whole snorkel lagoon, deep waters/swimming is not a problem. Will there be an abundance of fish mid april?

In our experience, there aren't an abundance of fish in the lagoon. There are some, and in the shallow, grassy area, and around the sunken vessels there are quite a lot; but it isn't like the Caymans where you're wading through schools of fish. Still, our family loves snorkeling the lagoon.

You really need some kind of reef to get lots of tropical fish. Castaway Cay just isn't their habitat.

If you want an amazing snorkeling experience, you may be happier booking something on another island.

That being said, my husband and kid had a good time. You may need to set your expectations accordingly.

The CC lagoon is not like snorkeling in Hawaii or on Grand Cayman. But you will see fish by the sunken items. We saw more large schools hamging out by them in Oct than we did three years ago also in Oct.

I have seen some larger schools out there, but they are few and far between. It is fun, enjoyable. I go every time I am there. And I am usually there in April. Just swim out as far as you are allowed and as early in the day as you can.

Snorkeling at CC is just for fun. It’s a good place for someone to start.

We have snorkeled in Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Nassau when cruising with DCL. Now these were some great snorkeling spot.

Anywhere in th lagoon where there is a structure or statue you will find the fish. Also near th fencing.

the family beach at CC is 'protected' by breakwaters , and 'inside' there are only the few rocks and Disney placed items to attract fish



if an experienced snorkeler .... don't expect much ..... other than being reprimanded by the life guards if you go out of 'the area'

I am an avid snorkeler and spent a lot of my time at Castaway Cay doing that. I was out in the main snorkeling lagoon for about an hour in the morning and then I went back in the afternoon for about an hour. I also put on my mask to see what I could find at the adult beach, Serenity bay.


The conditions were not as clear as other places I have been, and there wasn’t a reef, but I found plenty of things out in the water to keep my interest. Red and white buoys mark the spot where you can find sunken items, structures and even a boat.


Not surprisingly, the clarity is best the further out you swim.


Morning Snorkel: Along the left buoy line, then back to the beach along the right buoy line

As I was headed back to the beach, I saw this guy. I have never seen anything like it before, and it wasn't in any of my snorkeling guides. After returning home, I learned that it is a batfish:

Lots of Yellowtail Snappers

Afternoon Snorkel: Out to the Mickey statue

This turtle was close to the Mickey statue

Serenity Bay- very shallow water, probably about 3 feet deep in most places. Saw this guy while I was heading out to the engine block

Lots of fish hanging out around this sunken engine block
