My DH snores like a freight train-so much so that we don't sleep in the same room. Of course we are going to have one room on vaca with the kids. Ugh. So since sharing a room with him is unavoidable, any one have experience with a snoring vaca room-mate? What to do?
Thanks-

I had the same problem with my dh, until he went and did a sleep study. I always wore earplugs, i hated it but it worked and we even got to sleep together.
good luck!

Have you tried breathe-right strips? Those are supposed to help to keep the airways open and reduce/eliminate snoring. You can get a free sample from their website.

Hit the parks till you & the kids drop;) We have the same problem but we are so tired by the time we get to the room it sometimes is ok. Or DH will go walk around the resort until we fall asleep.

Short term, ear plugs.
Long term, sleep study to see if the cause of his snoring is treatable.

I have to deal with the same thing. I use a fan to try to drown her out. I also still have to wear headphones listening to something very loud. Breathing stips don't work. Also try to go to sleep before they do. Good luck

I, too, have the same problem when we are on vacation. This is always one of the down sides of vacations for me as I usually am completely sleep deprived when we return. I use headphones with my iPhone/iPad which helps somewhat and also DH takes the kids swimming in the afternoon so I can sneak in a nap without his snoring.

It was me and my just-retired parents in a room at All Star Movies for 5 days and I was absolutely inundated with the noise. I brought my ipod and earbuds and tried to drown them out with music. It worked a bit, but eventually I got so frustrated I went for a walk and ended up catching a few winks on a lounge chair by the pool, and also spent some time in the lobby watching movies. Never again! Castmembers thought it was kind of funny. They did have available rooms, but I didn't have the cash for an extra room. The ipod helped quite a bit, but you could hear my parents snoring from outside the room!

Ugh!! Had this happen last year with my mother. Ended up stuffing tissues in my ears in the middle of the night and it helped a little bit. This year I will go armed with ear plugs as we'll be sharing a night at POP together again. Any idea if they make ear plugs for toddlers as my DD will be with us too?

Long term - see if they'll go for a sleep study. I too snored like a freight train :scared1: until going for a sleep study and finding out I have sleep apnea. Now sleep with an oh-so-sexy CPAP machine but nary a snore through the night and have never felt better! Cannot believe how my life has changed for the positive since being diagnosed with sleep apnea and sleeping nightly with 'Darth!' :rotfl:

I would also worry about the kids sleeping enough. My DH does this too and he often sleeps elsewhere. On this last vacation, we rented a 2 BR villa so he could be alone. Good luck.

I hate earplugs but it beats the alternative-me going to the big house for murder..lol. He won't go for a sleep study. The funny thing is he used to snore just as bad till he had sinus surgery-then nothing. It was wonderful. He's put on quite a bit of weight (which he refuses to do anything about) and back with the snoring. Ugh.
Thanks for the replies!

Unfortunately, gaining weight is a big cause of snoring. It can cause obstructive sleep apnea and the pp are right, he should have a sleep study. It's really simple, I've had one. They put some wires on your head and chest and ankles and just monitor you while you are sleeping. If he's excessively sleepy during the day this may be the problem as well. He could be stopping breathing while sleeping.

With that said...my DH snores occasionally as well. He also had sinus surgery which worked for a few months. I keep ear plugs by the bed and use them when needed. That isn't optimal for you and your kids on vacation though.

A week or so before vacation see if you can get him to try a spray before bed. My DH has used it and it really does work. But it doesn't work wonders the first night. It takes a couple days. I believe it's called Snore Stop, or something like that. (Find it near the breathe right strips) You spray it at the back of the throat 1/2 hour before bed. Don't drink anything afterwards. Then spray again right before sleep. After 2 or 3 nights you shouldn't notice any snoring or very minimal. Let him use this while on vacation for a restful night sleep for all of you. :thumbsup2

Good luck and have a GREAT vacation!!!

He'd rather just have you be miserable? Aw, that's sad. I'd leave him at home. :sad2:

That's why we stay off-site in a 3-4 bedroom condo or pool home-lol!

I snore and my wife is a very light sleeper. We sleep with a box fan on high because the white noise of the fan is usually enough to mask the noise of my snoring and my wife is able to sleep. She'll also wear ear plugs if she absolutely needs too, but usually the fan is enough. Every time we've been to Disney World we've requested a box fan be delivered to our room by Mousekeeping and they've always obliged our request.

Remember there are health consequences to not treating obstructive sleep apnea. They are real and not to be ignored. So, my public service announcement completed continue on with the magic of Disney.

We have the same problem. My husband snores like crazy. I always travel with our Sleepmate sound machine (white noise). We get two double beds (I bunk up with DD7) we put the sound machine on the table between the beds and it drowns him out. I use it at home as well. I cant sleep without it. I think I got ours at Bed Bath & Beyond for about $40. I have tried several other machines and fans this one works the best and have lasted forever (7+ years).

While I can't understand someone simply refusing a sleep study, you do also have to keep in mind they are pricey and not always covered by insurance. We found that out the hard way and were out almost $500 out-of-pocket!!:scared1:

That said, we are now at the point of splitting up on vacation. Our last family trip to Disney, we were all in one room at POR. We survived, but barely...:rotfl: I think being absolutely exhausted at the end of the day helped a lot. This year's vacation is to Colorado, and I've rented a lodge/house so we all have our own rooms! (most nights at home I end up on the couch...I have ear plugs but they irritate my ear canal after too much use). Next trip to Disney, we will get two rooms (to be fair, it's also because we have three boys who are getting bigger and one room is just TOO cramped!). I guarantee you I'll end up with my boys in their room!

Oh, and I wouldn't worry about not hearing a fire alarm while using ear plugs.....they drown out most noise, but not all, and let's face it a fire alarm is designed to wake the dead!! (I can hear a simple smoke alarm when I'm using them).

Good luck and have a magical trip!:wizard:
