My husband is snoring in our bedroom so loud it has awakened the kids 2 times so far! I can't even go to bed with the ridiculously loud sound coming out of his mouth! I normally would poke him in the side and it would stop for a while, but not tonight, he just keeps snoring. Tonight it is the loudest it's ever been since we've been married (13 years). UGH! I swear you'd think a chain saw was running in there!

Yikes! So glad my boyfriend doesn't snore at least not loudly. Don't they have some sorta nose strip things to help clear up the nasal so he wouldn't snore as loud. I would kick him to the couch but that might not even be far enough.

I remember one night in high school I went camping with my friend and her dad, mom and two brothers all snored loudly. It was soooooooo loud in there I couldnt' sleep so I ended up putting my headphones on and falling asleep listening to my music. That was horrible!

Welcome to my world

I've gotten used to my partner's snoring, and can tune it out most nights. What wakes me up is when one or both of our cats is sleeping in the bedroom with us, and THEY start to snore...that little, high-pitched whine just jars me awake, and then I start laughing at them, which wakes my partner up...meanwhile the cat(s) just sleep and snore on...

I suggest that your hubby get a sleep study done to make sure that he does not have apnea. NC Beast was diagnosed 4 years ago----he snores loudly when he is not on his machine.

Sew a tennis ball in the back of a shirt he sleeps in. It will prevent him from sleeping on his back - a pumonologiist I know swears by it. :thumbsup2

Does your husband/wife/significant other:
  • Appear to stop breathing while they are snoring/sleeping loudly?
  • Snore so loud that you think that it'll wake up the neighbors?
  • Fall asleep during the day at the drop of the hat during the day but seems to sleep all night long while snoring?
  • Almost nod off while driving?

If so, they could have a serious condition called Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea happens when the tissue at the back of your throat repeatedly closes up while you are sleeping. Snoring is the sound of this tissue in the throat vibrating from the air going past it. This tissue closes off your airway and the person physically stops breathing. The body recognizes this because your blood oxygen level drops. To counteract this, your body wakes you up but only enough to start you breathing again. This happens many many times per hour - for me it was 60+ times. I was NEVER getting REM sleep.

Sleep Apnea is a serious disease with possibly deadly consequences. It can cause high blood pressue, heart problems, breathing problems - and in rare occasions might cause death.

You can get diagnosed with Sleep Apnea by going to your doctor and getting a referral to a sleep clinic. You sleep a night in their facility and they monitor you to see if you have a problem. It's easy, painless, and most insurance companies cover it 100%

There is a resolution! Surgery most likely will not resolve this problem. But people with Sleep Apnea can sleep with a CPAP machine that applies a constant air pressure to your breathing pathway - keeping that tissue open and allowing you to sleep like a baby. It's like a white noise machine for your bedmate.

Please, if you know someone that snores heavily, ask them to get tested. If not for themselves, ask them to do it for you. My wife doesn't know how she ever got any sleep before I got my machine. Get the sleep YOU deserve - and you don't have to do it in another bed across the house!!!

My husband doesn't have sleep apnea, but he is a snorer too. As CPM said, welcome to my world :sad2:

Plus, mine has sleep apnea. He has been through two sleep stuideis and own a CPAP he won't wear. Can you believe that?? This would be why I'm up at 3:49 am typing.

Don't worry, his life insurance is paid up ;)

Can't agree more on the sleep study. My DH finally had one about a year ago, and not only do we both sleep better, but I no longer worry about his health as much. Ask for a sleep study!

I went through a sleep study when I was snoring every night, and they eliminated sleep apnea as the source of the problem. After that I lost 100 pounds and magically the snoring went away. It hasn't returned.

Ugghh! I know the feeling.

When I was at my dentist last week, I was looking through one of their books and found a dental device that they say is 85% effective for snoring. It repositions the jaw, or something like that, so that the airway stays open. DH hasn't been fitted for it yet, but if it works it would be the best $250 we've ever spent!!!!

I wish I could remember the name of that thing!

There are many different types of oral appliances, both for snoring alone and for CPAP intolerant sleep apnea patients. DH has severe sleep apnea & because of this has made this a big part of his practice. He has specialized equipment (doesn't just do the "boil & bite" type appliances) and works closely with the patient's physicians on sleep apnea cases. He wears a CPAP himself - it is amazing how much better we BOTH sleep now! Oral appliances can be made for those who can't wear CPAP's.

Have a sleep study - apnea (snoring is a high indicator) can be life threatening.

If you would like to find a dentist in your area who does this type of work, you can go to the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine website at: http://www.dentalsleepmed.org/FindaDentist.aspx

Dh snores when he is sick and he has had residual effects from a cold recently.

I push him with my foot to make him change positions...that usally works. What make me nuts is hacking cough..it is bad...woke me up at 4:30 am on a Sunday (with the baby with MIL). I think I started to cry. Poor guy felt so bad...he didn't think I would wake.

Thanks for the info! DH's doctor says I just need a goot sleeping pill :confused3 What kind of help is that??? Our dentist can actually fit the device. He just has to have the forms (molds?) done of his teeth, then they do all the technical stuff, etc. At his next appointment, I'm going to have him get everything started.

I posted about this a couple weeks ago but no one responded :( LOL it's okay I'm good at killing threads :)

I'm the snorer in our family. We really think (and hope) it's because I'm pregnant and about 100 pounds overweight. DH says I didn't snore before being pregnant. I have been using the breathe right strips and he said it makes a little bit of a difference. And I never sleep on my back. The weird thing with us is he'll nudge me and tell me I'm snoring (in and out!) but I swear I'm AWAKE! How can I be snoring if I'm awake??

I could have written this post. We have the CPAP machine sitting by our bed collecting dust. I lose sleep because I feel like I have to "kick start" him breathing again. It's soooo frustrating!

I have found the breathe right strips work really well for me. But my dh snores terribly, especially after he has a few beers on the weekend.

My DH's snoring disappears when he lays on his right side. Unfortunately, I have to push him to turn over many times per night. He sleeps well, but I sure don't. I think I have a sleep disorder as its rare for me to sleep soundly throughout the night anymore. I guess you get accustomed to it but I think its taken it's toll on me. On certain days when his snoring is exceptionally bad, I just can't get sleep and it really messes me up for the day - I am dragging and I'm very irritable. I can certainly understand why people sleep in separate rooms. If I had one, I'd be using it.

Great information. I'm having the DH look inot the dental thingy.

The sad part is I could sleep in the guest room, but I'm afraid to leave him alone
