Besides the Cold Open, which I thought was very good, that had to be one of the weakest SNLs in history.

Definitely had a "phoned in" vibe.

They have a LONG way to go with the returning Cast and all the new Cast if they want to be a memorable Season.

Believe it or not..I have never seen one episode of SNL. No particular reason why (except maybe it's on too late for me), just not my thing

It's difficult for a new cast after a major shakeup. it's happened several times in SNL's long history.

At some point NBC has to ask themselves if it's really worth it to keep the show going. As soon as a performer gets noticed for being talented, they leave. It's hard to maintain a quality show when you can't keep your best cast members.

SNL makes too much money for NBC for them to not keeping it going.
Part of the draw of the show is the cast of unknowns (for the most part). Great writing is what has kept the show going. Unfortunately last night's show wasn't well written. "Weak Sauce" as my son and his friends used to say in their high school years. The Trump sketch was weak given the vast sea of material they could have pulled from.
As was mentioned in the open, they really needed a big name star hosting, not a second banana. Same with the musical guest. But as someone who has been watching since 1975 I may finally be "aging out" of SNL. Of course, SNL replaced one of my favorite shows, Weekend with Lloyd Dobbins and Linda Ellerbee, when it went on the air. Took me some time to warm up to SNL.

I agree. The open was funny, but mostly because it was making fun of how bad it was going to be. That said, they've needed a big shakeup and hopefully they can gel a bit. I think they should've changed more too, like Weekend Update - it still followed the same formula.

SNL has been getting worse comedy wise in my opinion. In my opinion it’s coming down to what people find acceptable in this current era in comparison to the past and not wanting political jokes shoved in their face. We have enough news shoved in our face on a daily basis and I wish SNL would just focus on more straight forward clean comedy. The BBC’s Mock the Week is more often than not a funnier program.

IDK I didn't think it was that bad, honestly I've seen worse entire shows and that's with amazing casts. I actually liked the cold opening because they were doing it SNL style--poking fun at themselves acknowledging that things might be a bit rocky here. It was better IMO than the first pandemic episodes as hard as they tried to do something for the audience while being at home

With so many that had left in one season it probably is difficult to them to get into a groove. I certainly will give them time to find a good working comfortability with each other.

SNL has never been known for clean comedy. It's pushing of the buttons of social acceptance that has often been its hallmark.

There were so many really bad, awful skits of the past that did reflect the attitudes of the audience but we def. don't view it the same way at all. They are more aware of how they use stereotypes in recent years and that is very good. Not that I don't get your complaint about the political things but it isn't as if SNL of the past was something we should want either because there were some really bad bad bad things they did.

I meant clean as in no one was accused of trying to push a double meaning. Nowadays, a joke that was seen traditionally as non offensive and just funny can be accused at random today as being racist or having some underlying meaning. I just find it sad that we constantly have to think whether we are allowed to laugh about something or not. :confused3

I think they should've changed more too, like Weekend Update - it still followed the same formula.

So I read an article about the new season. It said Weekend Update was the one thing they didn't want to change. With the midterm elections coming up, they wanted to keep it the same because they will have a lot of news to focus on.
Weekend Update is considered the anchor of the show since it's right in the middle and the format is fairly predictable. They also feel that Michael Che and Colin Jost are a strong team and they wanted to keep the segment intact in the midst of all the other changes. Hopefully the new cast will bring some new recurring characters to Weekend Update.

I don't find it sad, I find it a good thing. Change is hard though I get it. It's a direct reflection of our awareness and not everyone appreciates it but it's never sad to say "hey that was not a good joke back then" because chances are it was a bad joke we just were okay with it, now we're less okay, kudos to us IMO. Even the political stuff people are tired of it absolutely but it is a growing awareness that brought it out, that it is a salient feature to our society.

I don’t think it’s been good in decades. It used to make fun of everyone in the public eye, but now seems to just be a mouthpiece for one side of the political arena. But the worst crime that a comedy can commit is to just no longer be funny.

I like Che and Jost okay, but it was still the same formula with two side-guests. I did like the bit the new kid did as "himself." I thought that was funny! Still though, it could use at the very least a new look.

I thought last night was a "little" bit better.

I bet the White House is not very happy with Lorne about the Cold Open and Weekend Update!lol

Evidently I missed it,but I don't recall ever seeing an announcement that Cecily Strong wasn't returning.

I am not really into SNL as it usually references something American I am not aware of. I did see the skit on the Try Guys drama. It did start of well, and there is something worth parodying about how it blew up and the media coverage. But this was not done very well.

The Try Guys explanation video was judged as how a company should react, have a skit about big companies or big stars who handled it wrong and compare it to some 'nerds' doing it right.

There must be some kind of good 5 minute comedy in this drama about wife guys and cheating.

But then again, they say Ned still has one friend, and that friend still works at SNL. So maybe this was the best SNL could do.

Another lackluster show IMO.

And again,I thought the Cold Open was the best part.

I thought Chloe's Nancy Pelosi was hilarious.

I thought that cold open was one of the worst they have ever done and the show was the weakest of the season.
