Sniper person - does anyone else wonder if he is a terrorist???

Chris that thought occurred to me. But I am thinking it is a lone crazed American. I just hope when they finally get him that they put him away for good and don't let him off on an insanity plea. :(

Airforce...that is a scary thought.

I'm also thinking terrorism...mainly because of the different vans that are being spotted pulling away fast. One person doesn't own that many different cars....I also thought of the van being a decoy so the real sniper could get away! They stop all the white vans and find nothing in them...meanwhile a regular car just drives through the road blocks! I don't think 1 person would be capable of pulling this off...not with so much law enforcement around and the way they block the roads immediately. The Tarot card with the writting "I am God" sounds like something one of the religious zealots would say. Is this just a warning of things to come??

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's discovered there's more than one person involved, such as a terrorist cell linked to al Qaida.

It just doesn't seem like a typical serial killer. For the most part, serial killers get off on the suffering of their victims. The sniper isn't getting that when he kills people from long range like this. Also, serial killers are usually loners. Haven't their been reports of witnesses sighting more than one person in the van? In a way, that would make sense to have a shooter and a driver for an easier getaway.

That's not to say that it isn't a loner with no agenda other than to kill people. Maybe he's doing it for sport (anyone else ever read "The Most Dangerous Game"?) or for some other personal reason. Whoever it is must have some sort of professional training to make the shots he's making -- one bullet and nearly all killing shots.

Home-grown nutcase or terrorist with Bin Laden ties, it doesn't matter -- I hope they catch this murderer soon.

I don't belive this is the work of a terrorist in the traditonal sense. At least so far it's seemed like he was more of a homegrown evil individual.
I'm just praying that they stop this guy soon.

I keep thinking . . . if they are a terrorist group and some or all of them get caught, they might have another ring waiting in the wings to start up somewhere else. It would hurt the economy and change our lives. Think about it, they want Americans to live in fear. It fits.

A terrorist wants everyone to know what he did. This person is defying the officials and taunting them. Looks more like a wierdo to me.

I think if this guy was a terrorist he would be moving around a lot more. He's just a nut-case on a roll who thinks he's invincable. He'll be caught soon.

JUST MY OPINION. I THINK IT IS A SICK TIMOTHY MCVAY WANTABE HOME GROWN NUT!!!!!!!!!

DH and I were just discussing this last night. The assumption is that it's some kind of US domestic terrorist whacko (i.e. Timothy McVeigh) or just some sort of sick serial killer.

I am really surprised that no one's discussing the foreign terrorism angle. Who's to say it isn't some new way to scare US citizens into not going about their daily business. Especially since it's in the area of our nation's capital.

Whatever the situation, I wish they'd just catch this person. I can't believe he slipped through another total roadblock of the area again.:(

no, i don't think this person is a terrorist. i think he is just deranged.

there have been people like this before (think son of sam, jack the ripper, other serial killers) and there will be again. these kind of people didn't stop being crazy after 9/11. they're still around.

Whatever they are they need to be stopped. Each day it does look like more than one person is involved. Why doesn't the sniper attack on weekends? That is so odd. Do you think he/she/they might be a commuter?

Honestly, I would not be surprised to find out this is a terrorist cell. They do want to disrupt our lives and kill all Americans. But then again, it could just as easily be a very sick person from the US!

Here's an interesting article I just read;

Elusive killer may use murder to boost self-image, experts say.

By EUN-KYUNG KIM
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The only predictable thing about the elusive sniper - or snipers - terrorizing the Washington area is the unpredictability of the crimes.

The 11 apparently random victims were male and female; old and young; black, white, Hispanic and Asian. The shootings have occurred in the morning and at night. Four were at gas stations, but the crime scenes also have included a sidewalk bench outside a post office and strip mall parking lots.

Experts say the killer, or killers, appear to be thrill-seekers who revel in the fear they’ve created and the attention the crimes are receiving.

Scott Thornsley, a criminal justice scholar at Mansfield University, who specializes in serial killers, said the shooter may be planning how to increase the thrill level of his next attack. The most recent confirmed victim, Thornsley pointed out, was killed across the street from a Virginia state trooper.

“He’s operating on his own timetable. He can choose the place, the time, the location, the number of witnesses,” Thornsley said. “He is absolutely dictating the pace of the investigation, in a sense, by shooting so many people in a short period of time. He’s driving the police crazy.”

The 11th victim was shot Monday night at a parking lot in northern Virginia, near the intersection of several major thoroughfares.

Clint Van Zandt, a former FBI profiler, said the location of the latest killing _ in a highly congested area _ sets the slaying apart from the others. “This is not bold, this is brazen,” he said.

Sniper fire has cut down nine people and wounded two since the killing started the night of Oct. 2. Another attack occurred Monday night when a woman was shot dead outside a Home Depot store in Falls Church, Va., about 10 miles west of Washington.

Fairfax County Police Chief Tom Manger said Tuesday that ballistic evidence conclusively linked the shooting to other sniper attacks in the Washington area.

The absence of patterns in the spate of shootings reflect intelligence, a knowledge of how to plan and premeditate. He’s not a genius, but he’s no dummy, said Robert Ressler, a former FBI profiler who believes the shooter is working with a partner.

“They’re smart enough to break patterns, because they know that a pattern is going to get them trapped,” he said.

The shooter exclusively targeted adults with the first seven shootings. Then, after police indicated they felt schools would not be a target, shot a 13-year-old boy after he got out of his aunt’s car at a school in Bowie, Md. The boy remains in critical condition eight days later.

The geography of the shootings also changed abruptly. The first five victims were gunned down in the same area of Montgomery County, Md., the sixth just over the border in the District of Columbia.

But the seventh was wounded 60 miles away, in Fredericksburg, Va. And the sniper returned to that community to kill a man at a gas station last Friday.

The sniper has left little physical evidence but may have intentionally dropped a tarot card scribbled with a taunting message to police. “I am God” was written on the card, found near where the boy was shot.

“The first or second murder, they’re very paranoid, very frightened. They think the police are on to them and fear every knock on the door,” Ressler said. “But when they get away with it three or four times, they develop this omnipotence. `I am walking on water,’ or ... `I am God, because I’ve gotten away with murder.”’

The longer the killer or killers remain free, the cockier they will become and the more likely to make a mistake, Ressler said.

With the more recent attacks so brazen, it may be difficult for the shooter to return to the “more safe and secure type of shootings” he has committed, Thornsley said.

“He may feel obligated to act out in a way that has not been typical of his behavior in the past,” he said. “He has from the very beginning been out of character when we think of a serial killer.”

Ressler believes the killer is someone who uses murder to build self-image and to satiate a need to take higher risks.

“They see no life at the end of the tunnel, because they’re losers,” he said. “They’re probably fired from jobs. They’ve failed at employment, interpersonal relations, and are financially burdened. They are driven to abnormal behavior like this, because they can’t cope the way normal people cope.”

Ressler added that the killer, or killers, probably are thriving on the media attention.

“I think they have a true hope they will go down in the books with David Berkowitz, John Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer,” he said, referring to other well-known serial killers. “In other words, negative attention is better than no attention. I think this is what infamy is all about.”

"Why doesn't the sniper attack on weekends? "

probably b/c they have a wife/husband or live with people (family?) that work during the week, but are home on the weekend.

Caity, don't you wonder if there's a wife out there somewhere putting the pieces together?

Maybe the husband left a little early on some days, came home a little late on others...had jobsites in the areas that were affected in the late rush hour.

I truly believe that they have more to go on with the last shooting, but are holding back for now. Let's hope so!

I brought up the same question to DH last night. I wouldn't rule it out.

I think if it were Al-Qaida related they would be shooting people all over the US at the same time,That way they would have everyone in fear and do the most damage to the American way of life. The FBI would be spread thinner thus increasing their odds.
This person must have above average training with weapons to be so accurate with a single shot MO.

The tarot card signed "I Am God" was a reply to a news report where ATF agents said "He's playing God" I saw that on Larry King last week.

My only hope is that when caught, this deranged individual is given the same fate as his targets.

As for this sicko not hunting on the weekends? scary but, maybe he has custody of his/her kids or something like that?

I cringed as I watch the cops go up to the vans on cnn last night. what if this nut has massive amounts of explosives in the van and the freeway is bumper to bumper? A nut like this is not going to just easily give himself up. So many could end up dead on the freeway if this nut is stopped on the freeway.
