Sneaky way of getting free shipping at AE.

I agree, I was thinking the same thing. Why would you even post this, if you want free shipping and you are going to do it anyway...just do it you do not need our permission.

Right now they have a special at AE where if you buy $100 or more you get free shipping. I was thinking of buying my daughter a few new tees and buy up enough of something else to make the $100 mark to get the free shipping. Then when I am at the mall the next time, take those items back and get all the money back for the items I purchased just to get free shipping? Anyone else ever did this?

I've done it at Target with no problems. I wanted some shoes they didn't have in my size at the store. I wasn't sure what size I would be, so I ordered them in two sizes, tried them on when I got them, and returned the wrong size to the store.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this, OP. Don't feel bad.

Then why did you start the thread to begin with? Validation? Confirmation you wouldn't get burned with a shipping fee upon returning items to the store?

:confused3

Probably. Someone might have gotten burned with a fee before. There's nothing wrong in asking to make sure this wouldn't happen to her.

Is it really a big deal if the person doesnt mind returning the items? Geez :confused3

No...but it is dirty pool. That then, would be between the the person taking deliberate and unintended advantage of a system for personal gain...and karma.

I do agree with others who posted that such ploys are what get specials ended.

Ugh... Almost like buying a dress.. using it for the big night and returning it the next day... It all adds to the cost of all items sold.

i agree I would never do this........this is the type of thing that ruins it for the people who actually spend $100 to get the free shipping....but then again it has turned into a "me" world....all about me

I just wish the areo store had this special going on to! Old Navy does, but you have to use thier card and I only use Mickey's card! I will post back in about three or four weeks with the results, whether I do or do not get burned with a shipping charge. I doubt I will.:rolleyes1

Wow I am really surprised at some of the posts here. She isnt stealing or anything. If the stores offer returns from online do you really think they dont know this happens or do they really care? What if she bought duplicate sizes of items because she didnt know the sizes and it went over $100. Then she returned 1/2 of them. Would you chastise her for that? Same thing, she knew she was only keeping some of them.

People are tempted to do this b/c stores don't carry the items. Duh. I shop all the time w/free shipping from Lands End. Thankfully they don't have a min. to get the free ship. But I don't go to the store (Sears) b/c they don't carry half the stuff there that they do in the catalog.

"DUH"? Seriously are you 12, actually, thankfully, my 12 year old isn't that rude.

Actually, I also shop online at times to get something that isn't avaiable in the store but at American Eagle, the store in question, if you see something online that they don't have in the store or if they don't have your size in the store then they will order it for you with no shipping fees. It can be delivered to the store or your home- still free shipping. They have done this for me often as my DS wears a hard to find size.

Well, actually its not a lot of hassle to me. I go by the mall all the time, and ordering a crapload of clothes and letting my oldest daughter pick and try on what she wants in the comfort of our home beats going to mall and doing it with possibly my four-year-old with us. Believe me, it will be a lot less stressful. I am defanitly going to do it. I will let yall know the results in a few weeks. Thanks.

I hope they issue you store credit when you take back your items.

Because it is people who do things like this that make it harder on the rest of us. This kind of behavior is why so many stores have such strict return policies. If enough people purchase big orders to get the free shipping, and then return the bulk of it, they will just stop with the free shipping for anyone. Or more stores will start deducting some of the shipping fees from your return. So people who honestly have problems with their on line purchases will then be paying the price for others shady behavior.

FYI - Old Navy discontinued their free return shipping for plus sizes in March. Half the items are now return in store and half are return by mail for a 6 dollar shipping fee. Be careful what you order.

Thanks for letting me know this. I won't order from them at all if I have to pay shipping to return items.

I actually returned something to Kohl's ( I think) in store that I had ordered online. No I didn't get free shipping. When I returned I was refunded the shipping charge too. Don't know why. I didn't ask.

How is ordering extra stuff and returning it any different from sharing all the free shipping codes and the percentage or dollar off codes? Both are taking advantage of the system. Both free shipping and $ off will evetually end due to the abuse.

OP, I don't see what the big deal is. If you want to order extra and then return it, go ahead. You're still spending your time to return the merchandise and using your gas to drive to the store. It might not actually be worth the effort.

I understand why you are planning to do this, but it almost seems like a lot of work to me. You have to go to the mall all the time, so why not just buy what you want or have the store do the ordering for you? And if you order the stuff yourself, you need to pack up the stuff you don't want, make sure you have the forms & stand there to return it. But if you want to do it, go for it. They probably won't charge you for shipping even if you return the extra stuff, but we all shouldn't be surprised if the stores stop offering it. Look at Disney.com, they used to offer free shipping all the time, now it's $5 if you order $90 worth of stuff.

I really dont think the stores are going to change anything because a few people are buying online for free shipping and returning in the store. If anything they would just stop allowing in store returns and I highly doubt they would do that. I guess you dont understand that stores are dying for business right now? I guess we should chastise anyone who posts anything about doubling up on codes etc. too since many times its a manipulation of the system online?

Or what about the ones who print out multiple Target coupons and get their items for free even though it says one coupon per customer or transaction or whatever? Maybe Target will stop putting those coupons out because of that abuse..

I have never tried to take things ordered online back to AE, but I ran into another store that won't take back things ordered from their catalog, I think it may have been Delia's. Perhaps to prevent this type of thing? Or maybe because they don't carry everything in the catalog in the stores. I would make sure AE will take back things ordered online at the store before I did it.
