Can anyone tell me the significance of the sneaker tree out on Bay Lake near the dock to Discovery Island? My family and I were out on the lake on our last trip and noticed the tree full of sneakers. In all of the years of going to WDW and reading things on this web site, I never knew it existed and never noticed it before out on the lake.

Here's a picture and thanks in advance:

We saw the Sneaker Tree last year when we were on the Wishes Cruise. Our captain told us about it, however, I don't remember what he said. I guess I was too engrossed in the awe of it all on the cruise.

Does anyone else have a better memory than me???

I've heard that when people retire from WDW, they throw their shoes up in the tree

My undersanding is when the Captian of a boat does his last cruise (retires ,moves on ,whatever)they go by the tree and leave their shoes in the tree as a symbol of them being there.

In my area it has a total different meaning but I don't see Disney condoning the business of drug dealing.

That's correct. Many areas have a tradition like this. For example, there is a paddle on the Libertybelle that all Riverboaters sign when they take their first trip after being certified. The Mansion has a wall that the Cm's sign... the Sneaker Tree is for the Boat captains :)

Thank you all for the information. I knew it wouldn't take long to solve our curiosity.

I heard this same story

I hate to be naive, but what, do people set there sneakers out in a tree when they have drugs to sell or something? I have seen sneakers thrown up over a power line. Does this have any drug-related significance?

Yes up here in B-more it means that it's a drug corner or stash house if thrown on the power lines ,cable or tele lines or a tree.

Just watch the WIRE on
HBO and you will see it all.

They have a department that goes and cuts them down .
