I have a similar true story...

Friends of ours bought an old farmhouse to flip, rennovated it, sold it, the people lived there for a matter of weeks and then SUED our friends because there were snakes coming up everywhere! Turns out they had disturbed an old dried up well (or cistern, something like that), and the snakes weren't "happy"! Our friends had to pay to have professionals come in and deal with it (and it wasn't easy, pretty or cheap, but better than the lawsuit...). I'll never forget the new owner's wife telling me about waking up in the middle of the night, walking to the bathroom in the dark, and stepping on something...slithery....

We have a boatload of garter snakes in our yard,and our big cat Hootie likes to sneak them inside.Nothing like picking up a magazine from the floor and jumping twenty feet into the air because of the snake underneath.
