No sign for snake warning but have seen a few snakes. This past trip there was two around the boardwalk at wilderness lodge. And the snake skin on their beach.
I haven't seen any signs posted and I wouldn't expect to. I have seen snakes on our last two trips to WDW. One was at our resort POR and the other was at Magic Kingdom right behind the castle. I am not a lover of snakes as a matter of fact I am scared to death of them but these were some what small. I was still scared of them.
Since I read a thread a couple of months ago about a snake sneaking into a room when a mousekeeper had propped the door open, at POP I think, I have decided to request a top floor studio for our stay at OKW!
I am from a country with virtually no poisonous snakes. My daughter ran ahead of me at Port Orleans Riverside, and chased a black snake into the bushes before i could see what it was. Both my wife and myself were shocked, and never even thought prior to her running ahead of us that there were poisonous snakes in our resort. Signage or documentation prior to us walking around there would have been useful...she was not bitten, nor did we see the snake again.
As someone else pointed out, there is only one state in the US that does not have poisinous snakes. I wouldn't expect WDW to put up signs stating they are around the resort. WDW is part of Florida and there are just a lot of things in Florida that would love to have a nibble. Just being on Disney property doesn't keep them away.
No matter if the wildlife was poisinous or not, I wouldn't let any child chase any wildlife. It just isn't nice. And things that are not poisinous can have nasty bites too.
But now I know if I ever travel abroad that is something I should check into.
We just got home from Disney and while we loved our stay at POR, we saw cute little bunnies everyday, and a black racer on the walkway but it slithered off very quickly. The pool guy there told a guest that I was talking to about a 6ft snake out in the bushes by the quite pool.
While I expect to see snakes & gators there because of the river there, I was shocked to see a bobcat! While I was washing clothes I saw one walk by the door and into the bushes. A man walked up just after to see it but it was gone. And that same day they were trying to remove a gator from the river. Needless to say we watched every step we made while we were there!
A sign or two wouldn't hurt anyone. They have signs about gators, why not snakes. I'm from upstate NY where snakes are few and far between and it would never occur to me to keep my eyes peeled when walking near bushes or water, etc. We just don't have to worry about that here and I know zero about snakes so a periodic sign would remind me to be alert when in lush areas like that. I certainly don't expect the place to be plastered since snakes can be anywhere, but for instance, here we have a ton of deer and there's signs every few miles on the highway alerting you of deer potential. Just a reminder. No different.
I would think that all of the first aid stations at Disney have snake bite kits and that there are people trained to use them. If not, then that would do a whole lot more good than any sign would. Disney was built on swamp land. Common sense says there are going be snakes. Maybe one sign in the lobby warning of that? Because they'd have to litter the entire property with signs otherwise.
As far as getting bit by a cottonmouth (water moccasin), stay away from areas that they like to nest in. They are common in the south and can be very aggressive. Unlike copperheads, rattle snakes and coral snakes which really are more scared of you than you are of them, cottonmouths will charge at you.
The signs for the alligators are usually not to warn of the presence of alligators as much as they are to warn people not to feed the alligators. If you feed the gators they start getting friendly and the next thing you know they're attacking people.
we have come across them on several visits. Once was in the lazy river at Thypoon. The river quickly cleared
An other time was at AKL the CM sent the kids on a treasure hunt during which they found a snake. At that time it had not crossed my mind that there would be snakes arround the pool area, so I was a little taken aback that a CM had sent several groups of kids to poke arround the bushes on the hunt.
Finialy the only problem we ever had was not from a snake but from a visious Squirel which attacked my mum and biting her finger and not letting go, until a CM appeared and pulled it off. This was at MK and my mum went to the first aid center who patched it up. However, it was only after we got back to the UK we found out that she should had gotten a rabbies shot for this. It was never mentioned by the first aid staff.
OK so this really would never have crossed my mind! I had heard that there were snakes by the rocks at the pool at CSR but actually never even thought about it when I was there! How stupid am I but it would never have crossed my mind that they were venomous!! And I'm now thinking that maybe I should've been a bit more scared of a spider I saw last year!!
Disclaimer, I'm from Scotland, we don't really come across snakes (certainly not poisonous ones) and a large house spider is the scariest thing that I've ever had to deal with! LOL!
I will keep my son away from the bushes but I'd like to keep a certain level of ignorant bliss about what's out there! Can someone delete this thread from my memory please!!??
Why oh why did I read this entire thread? LOL I am from Southern California and we also have a home in Spokane, WA. I know about snakes and spiders. I have seen one very small snake a Disneyland on a path and that is about it. Even though most people know that there are snakes, I think being at WDW puts us into some ignorant state of bliss. It is so easy to forget that this enchanting place was once a huge swampland!
The story of the nest in the room about did me in..... I am questioning my need to even go downstairs to switch my laundry in the basement right now.... eeekkkkkk!
