Snacking in a studio or 1 bed room

We are staying in a studio this January and it finally hit me that the studios only have a microwave. When we stayed at a 2 bed room at OKW, we used the stove a lot. My question is to people who stay in the studios. Do you do a lot of meals in the room? Is so what kinds of food do you "cook" in your microwave.

Thanks for the help,
Charlene

Whenever we have stayed in a studio, I usually bring some microwave popcorn for snacks. But we do buy some milk for cereal in the morning, and you could put some lunch meat in the fridge for sandwiches.

but if you are in a 1 bedroom, you will have a full kitchen like you had in the 2 bedroom.

This will be my first stay in a Disney studio, but I've stayed in other hotel roooms that only had microwaves.

Some things I've done:

Hot breakfast cereal (oatmeal, cream of wheat)
Cocoa/ tea/ etc
Warmed bagel (not toasted, but better than cold!)

Foods specifically designed for microwaves:
Pizzas
Frozen dinners
Mac'n'cheese
Noodle dishes (like ramen noodles)
Non-refridge dinners (Pasta Anytime, Homestyle Express, etc)

Soups/ stews/ chilis
Tortilla shells/ grated cheese/ beans - instant burrito!

Hope that helps. It really isn't tough - just have to think about things from another angle.

We cooked scrambled eggs for breakfast in the MW and heated up left-overs from the night before for lunch.

Isn't there a toaster in the studios? I haven't stayed in one yet but thought I saw one in photos I've seen of the studio kitchenette. Wasn't sure if you just preferred it warmed but not toasted or that there was no toaster.

You can make scrambled eggs and bacon in a microwave. Personally I don't bother because cereal or yogurt or a muffin is a fine breakfast.

Otherwise...you can combine foods in a micro to make meals. "Grill" cheese, salads with hot chicken. Frozen dishes from the general store. Reheating take out like rotisserie chicken. It is also possible to make five minute oatmeal in the microwave. You need a deep dish or my personal favorite a beer mug to do it.

If you really want to get creative I'd recommend looking up microwave cooking online...you would need to bring the appropriate heat proof dishes with you (corning ware or some of the other microwave ware).

We brought an electric fry pan and made hamburgers egge etc, and it worked out great, with the micro. We just eat breakfast in the room most of the time or maybe a light lunch. :cool1:

Hubby and I just rented our first points for a stay at the BCV. We always have tons of leftovers when we eat out in Disney and in the past they've mostly gone to waste. Hoping to bring 'em "home" with me this trip for some yummy meals.

We stopped and picked up pizza on our way from the airport. We ordered an extra one so we would have leftovers to micro. Just put them in a Ziploc Bag in the fridge.

We really like the baked potatoes they serve with the steak meal at Pepper Market. We usually get it to go with all the fixings. Great Micro meal as we are normally so full we save the potato for later.

We grilled on Fathers Day last summer and made extra for the micro. That was excellent and we had alot of fun grilling like we were really at home! LOL!

I always take my Mickey Waffle Maker and on our leisurely mornings, we had Mickey Waffles and sausage. The boys were thrilled with that.

We had a great mix of meals and it was nice to not have to dine out every night. We did our favorites and tried some new ones and had a pretty good selection in our room.

Ok, I'll preface this with we bought DVC sight unseen after reading, research and the Disboards info. So prior to ever seeing a 1 or 2BR we always stayed in a studio (dd was 6 and DS was 10--they are now 10 and 14).
1. there is a toaster
2. Though they come frozen in the store, frozen pancakes do not need to stay frozen to be good for the week--same for waffles.

Breakfasts: Sausage and pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes, bacon and waffles, muffins, bacon, egg and cheese on an english muffin, bagels, breakfast cereal,

Lunches/Dinners: bagged lettuce, salad dressing, already cooked chicken breast cut up (louis rich I think)--great for chicken ceasar salad, the already cooked taco meat on chips with cheese for nacos, or on soft tortillas for tacos, Kraft Easy mac, Any of the convienience foods pasta pronto, already cooked rice, soup, cold cuts for sandwiches, Finally, if you have a Tupperware micro stack cooker you can actually cook a three course meal for a family of four in the microwave--but hey I'm on vacation and don't want to go that far :rotfl: .

Of course now we have been spoiled by 1BR and 2BR and rarely stay in a studio.

Hope this helps!

As I said - I haven't stayed in a Disney studio yet - these were things I did with just a microwave.

I'm sorry tp_magill -- you had such a great list of suggestions in your original post that I focused right in on that and totally missed your comments that these were things that you've made with only a microwave available. What can I say -- it's been a terribly stressful week and I'm so sleep deprived I can't see straight.

I'm planning our first DVC stay and we'll be in a studio. My breakfast plans require a toaster so I just wanted to be sure there will be one there. Thanks, patsal for confirming that there is a toaster in the kitchenette.
