Another thing to look into is getting a used machine. There a couple of places I know of - that don't advertise much - where you can get a used washer that's been fixed up. You'd have to ask around or look carefully, but it's possible that there's some place in your area where you can get an older, sturdy machine.
I have a perfectly good washer right now, but I've looked at the new washers, and they just look cheap, even the higher end washers. It's all plastic parts painted to look like metal. I doubt they'll last longer than 7 years. My plan is to get a dependable older machine that's made of metal if (when?) my nearly 20 year old washer or drier ever dies.
